The moves seem almost violent and lightning fast. I suppose it is true of most athletes, but here I notice that all four limbs are involved. I can't imagine all the work that goes into developing their technique. It is so fast and smooth in transitioning between components of a move, that the result seems almost pre-ordained.

One of my roommates in grad school invited a former competitive martial arts fighter to our apartment one day. He stopped competing because he felt there was too much cheating. My roommate got the bright idea for him to attack me (no contact, thankfully). One minute, he is a thin, soft spoken guy, and the next he has transformed into something like a windmill with four limbs. No warmup, he didn't even adopt a fighting stance. He was this machine whirring and spinning and advancing on me. At that moment, I just froze, not wanting to get in the way of this egg-beater attack. The whole "bout" took no more than 2 seconds. (Again, no contact.)

Anyway, this clip was fascinating in itself. I'll want to check out the real competitions.

Fun thing about watching judo is how suddenly it can go pear-shaped. You can be winning and totally manhandling your opponent and then in a tenth of a second you’re in the air upside down…

So many players are now focusing more time on newaza, the ground game. I think we'll see a lot more matches end in submission than in years past. Seems the refs are giving more time on the ground than in years past as well.
