Mellencamp played an outdoor concert in my town last night (opening for Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan!). I didn't go, but the local paper had a gallery of photos from the show. The shots of John "Cougar" show him playing a tele style guitar, 'cept with a funny headstock...any idea the maker:

I can't think of it off hand, but I have seen them on ebay frequently. Ugly is my opinion.

That's a beautiful guitar. The body color is just great. It's a boutique-type guitar; surely someone knows what it is!? The modified headstock is brought to you by Fender's patent protections.

The headstock almost looks like a Fred Stuart, but I don't think it is.

It almost looks as bad as an Ernie Ball Head or whoever makes the Van Halen special guitar. Tele heads are my least favorite part normally and that's even worse...

I've always been a fan of Tele headstock. I just like it. Small & compact the decal scales well to it. Even Mellencamp's headstock doesn't bother me too much, although, I agree it is a little odd. It's USACG's extra bump on the Fender design that would be the first thing my sanding block would find.

I saw this tour on a rain-driven stop in central NJ. Never been a fan of John's, but this was the second time I've seen him (the other was at Farm Aid in 2007) and both times I've been kind of shocked at how blown away I was by his sets. His band is tight tight tight, and there is a great catalog of beautiful guitar tones. In fact, after the show a couple of weeks ago I talked to his sound guy to compliment him on the mix - a rainy night in a minor league ballpark, and it was one of the best mixes I've ever heard live. Under those conditions, it was pretty amazing.
