    Hi all:

For forty years, I've wanted to be able to play the beautiful R&B/jazzy fills on Elvis Costello's "Alison." This weekend I finally transcribed and learned it. The original part was played by guitarist John McFee, who was in the band Clover at that time (which later became Huey Lewis and the News). This was before Elvis formed the Attractions. I know Elvis played a Tele on the record (he hadn't yet bought the famous Jazzmaster he's pictured with on the cover), and I suspect McFee did as well. A free transcription is in the description on Youtube.

I love that song, we used to cover (in a cover band I was in) I remember learning a bunch of those licks.

I have always loved the song, I play it and I love these licks.

They really make the song, so spare and well timed.

Great production, especially for that timeframe. The song still stands up to the test of time. I find no flaw in it.

Lovely stuff. I remember when my dad bought the album. I don’t listen to EC much these days but this will always be one of my favorite guitar songs.

Yep. That is my favourite non-jazz non-Beatle album. I've been listening to it steady since 1978. Never get tired of it. By the way, I loved your work with Spinal Tap.

You absolutely nailed it. I was inspired to peruse your YouTube channel. Found 2 of my favorites, All of Me and It Don't Mean a Thing. Really nice. Love that L7 too! Thanks for posting.

It’s one of the unspoken truths of our relationship. I don’t even want to think of who I would be if I’d grown up without his records. I’ve thanked him for that quite a bit but I guess we always just assume that our taste is good.
