When Joe Walsh played with James Taylor he used a red strat with a black pickguard looked like it had 1 knob and an SD Mini Humbucker in the bridge. Also sorta looked like a black Tele neck pickup but not sure.

Anyone have more info on this guitar it sounded awesome.

Agree 100%

Hey Mark,
I don't have any more info for you but I agree that he sounded great with that guitar. Really caught my attention.Made a mental "must try that one day" project note to self.

Sorry to attack your thread, but did you check out his shoes?

i love his humor... his hat was awesome too

I was there. What the video does not show (I don't think) is him coming out in an even wilder bright yellow and green blazer jacket. Mind you, it is 95 degrees and 90% Texas humidity and most of us are sitting under the direct sun. He says something like, "It's so cold out here, I had to wear my jacket.". Then, he quickly pulled it off and started playing.

Great entertainer.

I might be dreaming this, but it seems that he also came out and played a rectangled guitar that he said that Bo Diddly gave to him. It seemed that he played 5 different guitars on his 6 song set.

I posted several questions about the red Strat clone that Walsh used for that number, as I loved his tone, too. I posted at the SD forum and emailed Walsh at his web site. I got almost nowhere in terms of details, but Evan Skopp of SD finally posted a reply indicating that Walsh uses SD mini-HBs wound specially for him by "his friend Seymour". Now the mini-HB in question has a cover just like the standard SM-series, but I trust that Evan knows what he's talking about. I'm still left wondering which of the standard SM mini-humbuckers would come closest to that tone. I have only used the SM-3 neck pickup in a Tele. Still looking for answers...

Mark, His sound kinda reminded me of Peter Frampton - Framton Comes Alive -"Do You Feel Like We Do".

Do you hear that at all?

I havent heard that Frampton in so long they saturated the radio with it when it came out and I dont think I have heard it since then LOL.

What I hear is some good old gritty blues. I liked the part where Joe did a lick kinda like he does in Funk 49 and James T and the BASS player both smiled big.

I got that DVD recently as a gift and need to watch some more/again. Initial reaction was the Walsh material was the most fun to take in; Funk 49 with Steve was enjoyable.

Joe did a pretty cool diminished type thing at the end of his solo in Steamroller Blues IIRC which I'd like to get my hands on too!

Are you talking about that strange lick that you hear in various Joe Walsh songs? I don't know how to describe it, except it sounds like he is playing notes in passing of several different scales. It is the same type of lick that you hear in Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry" and in The Firm's "Radio Active".

Somebody please give me a tab of those licks. They have been haunting me for years, yet I cannot figure out what they are doing.

I think I know the lick you are talking about

It is a progression like this.

on the bottom E play the fifth fret, then on the A play the sixth, on the D play the 7th, then start with the 5th fret on the A and keep repeating the same progression until you reach the top E. Let me know if that is the sound you are looking for

YAHOO!!!!

That is basically the Joe Walsh lick that I was talking about. Jimmy Page does something different that has a similar effect in Radioactive. Sort of an expanded reverse of that pattern.

Now, if I can just figure out how to use that lick in context and end it nicely.

Thanks a bunch!
