Yeah, I remember seeing the auction online. This is the beastie:

It's entirely possible that I'm mixing this Squier up with the CBS gifted Fender Tele (black guard and maple neck). Hmm, need to find a late 70's picture of Joe with a shiny black Tele that he wasn't even keen on... needles and haystacks, much?

Maybe this one, in which case I was right about the guard/neck after all :) :

You were absolutely right: Joe was gifted the black/maple telecaster by Fender.
He never liked this guitar although he used it for gigs.
He also used to own a 50s blackguard esquire, only pic I ever saw is in a book I own. The photo has been shooted by an Italian guy, I sarte a thread about it a few years ago.

If you are referring to the blackguard esquire I've just posted, the Italian photographer says that the pic was taken in Italy, mid 80s if I'm not wrong. I should check it to be more precise.

Probably more than Joe could have ever afforded or have been willing to spend...

He married Pamela Moolman, who was Spanish, allegedly for £120 to get her citizenship.

    [edit] South African ?

If I recall correctly, she was/is from South Africa, but I can be wrong.

yeah, and it’s ironic that a guitar based on a Pearl Jam guitarist’s Strat would cost so much. They spent a good portion of the 90’s fighting Ticketmaster over exorbitant concert prices.

Ha! I have no idea who plays guitar in Pearl Jam (or any instrument except vocals). Pales into insignificance compared to Joe! I do know two songs though, "Alive" and some bloke's name :p

That's it! I love this guitar so much, it will be very difficult to resist (if the price is not crazy high..)

    Actually yes.
The guy will ship it on Monday - we cannot meet because of Covid restrictions. Here is a pic of the actual guitar

Not to disagree, but wouldn't an Esquire be the ultimate Fender for punk? I liken them as a distant shirt-tail relative of a LP Jr., which is uber punk.
