Another treasure trove of musical bizarreness pulled from the farmhouse basement this morning in what must be a pretty compleat collection of the apparently piano-playin, defrocked TV evangelist Jimmy Swaggart records.

They ain't going home with us...but if he played the pan flute instead of a keyboard, I might just hang on to them. Too bad, Jimmy.

The way I heard it, cousins Jerry Lee Lewis, Mickey Gilley, and Jimmy Swaggart learned to play on the same piano.

    Here ya go. LINK

I still prefer he played the pan flute, nothing can beat it for performing breathy renditions of 'El Condor Pasa'.

I'm shocked and disappointed that the story of the Ferriday cousins is not already a ten episode Netflix series.

Don't forget the other cousin Mickey Gilley. The three of them used to listen at Haney’s Big House as kid's. Despite all of Swaggart's failings he had a really good voice back in the day.

And Jimmy once tried to save the killer:

“I didn’t know Swaggart was your cousin,” I said. “He came down and pulled me off the ****in’ stage,” said Lewis. “I had 5000 people at my show. This was in Baton Rouge, must’ve been three or four months ago. I was strung out on pills, and I don’t know how, but he knows everything I do. I was singin’ ‘I’m the meat man, ya oughta see me eat, man,’ gettin’ to where I was really rockin’, the place packed, and all of a sudden there stands Jimmy Lee, right on the stage. I said, ‘Heeey, Jimmy, how you doin’? Nice lookin’ shirt you got on.’ It looked like a damn pajama top. He said, ‘Boy, you’re comin’ with me.’ I said, ‘Well, let’s go.’ I was feelin’ good, I didn’t care.”

Lewis poured himself another drink. “The promoter came runnin’ up and Jimmy said, ‘Just talk to my lawyers.’ He took me home, poured all my whiskey down the sink and all my pills down the commode. I sat down in a chair and we talked for a while About four o’clock in the mornin’ I was ready to fight. No good, though. Jimmy just come and put his arm around me and said, ‘You’ll be all right, pal. Have some more malted milk and shrimp.’ That’s all I got for a week! I guess it saved my life. Nobody else had sense enough to say anything to me about it. They’d say, ‘Boy, you’re doin’ great.’ And I was strung out like a wild Comanche.”

My Ex and I went to a Jimmy Swaggart crusade about 1980 or so at the Richfield Coliseum. All the big concerts came there at the time. Jimmy Lee and crew filled that place up to the top, close to 20,000 people. One of the best musical experiences I ever had. They were real pros, all of them.

I've been over to Jimmy's old house on River Road in Baton Rouge (just the other day ... like almost 40 years ago). Real nice, and he had a nice piano in the front room. Never heard him play though.

a well, I imagine this thread will git stopped pretty quick, but...

I could make a long post about brother swaggart, been a long time favorite of mine in Gospel music, but the man has serious problems as a human being. he can play the hell out of a piano though.

    ARROGANT.

The only difference between show business and religion is religion usually has an owner's manual of some kind.

And just when you think it couldn't get weirder...
