Hey all. Another compressor thread here. I'm getting a JHS Pulp 'n' Peel soon. In all the videos and demos I've watched, it sounds great to my ears. Wondering who else on the forum may be using one...? Any thoughts or comments on it? Favorite ways to use it? Pre or post overdrive preferences?

Overpriced Orange Squeezer.

That said, the Orange Squeezer is a nice and "transparent" compressor. I don't use compression anymore, but I preferred to use it after dirt. I am in the minority with that setup, but I'm in good company. Vince Gill and Trey Anastasio both use their compressors post dirt as well.

Hope you don't need to get it repaired. JHS couldn't put batteries in a flashlight.

Yes, I would agree that they are more expensive than they ought to be. Lucky for me, I am friends with a private dealer and I am trading him some guitar setup services for the pedal. So I won't be out any cash.

And yes, Mr. Pants, I'm well aware of your disdain for JHS pedals as I've seen you knock on them rather heavily in other threads. :)

thats Dr Mr Pants ;)

to be fair, i think his beef (and mine) are more constructive than thinking they bite. Am not sure on the sound of them, but the builders attitude definitely puts me off. thankfully they're not to prevelant in the uk, but if you're getting it for some of your time, and its not to taxing time, why not give it a whirl

I'm really interested to know what kind of experience(s) you had with them that you're referring to (how their attitude "puts you off"). Are they jerks to customers?

well the dude tries to make out he's doing something quality and original when he's ripping off others designs and also knocking out classic clones at quite expensive prices given the build quality, when called out on this he hid behind the "I'm a good christian" thing. this automatically gets my back up

This is why... His pedals are part for part clones of other circuits. Below are just the ones that Devi traced, but others have shown that most of his work is just ripping off other designers. You'll see that Devi herself has been on the opposite end of his business practices. Needless to say, she was pissed.

Here ya' go. All traced by Devi Ever herself.

4 Wheeler Bass Fuzz - Zvex Wooly Mammoth
All American - Proco Rat w/ popular tone mod
Angry Charlie - MI Audio Crunch Box
Astro Mess - Devi Ever Hyperion
Bunrunner - Devi Ever Hyperion / Tone Bender
Charlie Brown - Brown Sound In A Box diy circuit from general guitar gadgets
Mini Foot - Bazz Fuss diy circuit
Morning Glory - Marshall blues breaker
Mr. Magic - Zvex Super Hard On
Sweet Tea - MI Audio Crunch Box

Calling the crap when I see it. If I were the only one, then you'd have something.

Exactly. It's *NEVER* about someone's wares simply sucking. Because that's subjective. It's *ALWAYS* about the honesty and integrity for me. Some (most)
would rather I kept quiet (to put it mildly) but I have a hard time remaining silent when someone has a proven record of some sort of dishonesty, or at least integrity.

For those that are offended by that, there's always TGP.

You will find more love for relics and Nickelback around here then JHS.

I am fan of clones, I have built (see avatar my SHO build) and paid people to build them for me. What I am not a fan of is someone mass producing cloned pedals, calling it their own design, and then trying to destroy the person they stole the design from when they get caught aka JHS vs. Devi Ever.

I personally can care less if anyone wants to buy and use JHS pedals, however if someone is willing to do dirty things to build a business, they are willing to do dirty things to keep the business afloat.

The Superbolt is a copy of the ROG pedal. (ROG has 2 Supro inspired pedals, I forget which he stole.) I love that he claimed he spent years "designing" it.

Issues with JHS' integrity aside, it realy comes down to what you're after. I had a Pulp'N'Peel. It is a nice sounding compressor - very transparent, very mild and tasteful. I play a lot of chicken picking, but I don't like monstrous squash. I've owned many comps, and this one beat out a good many. Between it and the suggested SP, I would take the P'n'P. It's all personal, but the SP had a feel to the compression that I couldn't warm up to at all. I replaced all of them with a Diamond and won't look back - ever.

Or one could find out whose pedal the PnP is a lift of and buy for that for less.

This is where I'm at.

You can leave integrity issues aside when the builder has a completely original idea that is worth the hype. This isn't the case. Complacency is what these guys feed on.

Thank you. And I mean that sincerely.
