I can’t seem to find any threads on any forums or any videos that talk about the sound differences between running the Angry Charlie at 18v instead of 9v.

The usual “more headroom, more amp-like” isn’t very helpful — some pedals I prefer at 9v, others at 18v (e.g., the Friedman BE-OD). The differences are often in top end fizz, note separation/clarity, compression, etc., but not always.

Does anyone have any experience with this pedal at 18v?

I assume you've checked with JHS to make sure the pedal can handle 18v?

I've got one, it's my "80s Rock" pedal LOL.

Yeah, I double checked that it can run at 18v. That would’ve sucked if I tried it and it couldn’t :)

I’ve seen a video comparing 9 and 18 for the JJS AT, which I’ve heard (but am not sure) is similar to the AC. I liked the differences in that vid.

I love my AC, I’m just getting ready to start recording several projects and am exploring options.

The AT ( I had the v1, I prefer the ACv3) sounds very close to the AC... the AC can do more mids. I didn't like the AT as much because I felt the high end controls (there are 2) were very touchy and hard to get just right. I definitely prefer the ACv3. And I don't miss the toggle that the AT has- I always left it in the same position, ands it's the position the ACv3 is "in" permanently (it's the in-between position, I think they called it the "50W mode"? 100W, 50W, 25W mode... with increasing compression as the "watts" goes down. The AC is permanently in the 50W mode)

The AT definitely is instant Andy Timmons, the Angry Charlie has a more versatile EQ so it can do a little more, imo.

My guess would be running the AC@18V would make it more like the "100W mode", which means more clarity and less compression. If you'd like a slightly stiffer feel and a tad more clarity, try 18V. (sorry, I know you said that wouldn't be very helpful, but that's what it is LOL)

IMO, it usually does two things. One, it moves the response in the direction of a "tight" sound (less sag/compression, better/more dynamics--when you hit the strings the tone comes fast, with less "bloom"). Two, subjectively, at least, it emphasizes the low end a bit (I say subjectively because the overall result probably doesn't get measureably bassier, but because the power supply has more juice, the circuit can reproduce those low frequencies faster/better than it normally would, which changes the feel and makes it seem like there's more going on in the lows). Similar to running an amp with a bigger power transformer.

Thanks for your experiences.

I can’t wait to try it… life keeps intervening.
