A while back I bought an older Fender 75 all tube 1-12 amp which sounded pretty good. It had a Fender special design speaker in it which I imagine was the original. I found an old JBL 12" guitar speaker on the internet for $150 and bought it. I installed it in the amp and WOW!!!! I couldn't believe the difference it made. All the notes seem more crisp with a lot more punch. I used JBL's in the 60's mostly and sort of got away from them when I went to Peavey amps but now I'm back on board. I'm thinking of trying to get one for my pedal steel amp which is a Nashville 400. Has any one ever compared the JBL to a Black Widow? I'd like to hear any opinions.....Thanks, JH in Va.

JH,

I'm waiting on delivery of a pair of Ted Weber's California speakers, for my Twin.
The California is Ted's version of the JBL D120F.

I have a pair of D130F 15s in a JBL designed cabinet. I built it to look like a Showman Cab but it has some subtle differences. Just amazing tone. It may be big, but I'll be keeping it.

I have been using the K series for about 3 years now, they are dy-no-mite.

I have the same pair of K-120's that I bought for my first Twin Reverb in the '70's. Amps come and go, but the speakers remain the same. They currently live in a closed back 2 X 12" small Bassman-type cab.

The best clean tone I ever had was the above mentioned Twin (stock speakers) pushing an extention cab with a D-130. Wow!

The California isn't an exact D-120 clone. Ted has mentioned that he has an exact D-series speaker in the works. I think he's going to do a D-130 first. He's responding to requests from steel guitar players.

Weber California vs JBL

I agree that these speakers are not the same. I recently listened to 2 Vibrolux Reverbs recently, one with JBL-D110 and the other Weber California Ceramic 10s....They didn't sound anything alike. It would be great if Ted could actually make an accurate JBL-like speaker.

Wouldn't Ted's ALNICO version of the California be the JBL clone? The JBL "D" series speakers have alnico magnets...

I don't know the exact differences between the Cali and the D-120. I do know that JBL used some real heavy frames. Not sure about the technical specs.
