Hot Rod JT-LT
I have had a Tobacco burst JT-LT for probably 10 years now. It was the cheapest way for me to get into a tele at the time. Someday when I am playing more I will get a true tele, but I will hold onto the JT-LT. It is certainly a different little guitar with a few interesting quirks:
- This has got to be the lightest guitar ever! Even the Danelectro U2 re-issue I had (why did I sell that guitar?!?!!?) seemed heavier
- The tuners and nut are pretty much rubbish
- It looks great and has reasonable action once set up properly
That said, mine is hardly stock. Because I got it so cheap and there is little resale value, I used it as a platform to mess with pickup rewiring. The tone pot was replace with a push/pull pot for phase switching and the 3-way selector was replaced with a 5 way.
My original intent was to allow for the standard Tele 3 was selections: Bridge, Neck, Both plus Both is Series (there was no 4way switch, so the 5th position was unneeded).
Due to the construction shortcuts, the pickup grounding is a bit dodgy and quite by accident, the phase switching makes an audible difference in Bridge or Neck selections, especially the neck.
The additional switching makes for some pretty cool tones that aren't usually seen outside of hot-rodded guitars:
-B+N - Parallel - Out of Phase: Very thin, funky sound. Think of the intro to "Play That Funky Music White Boy"
-B+N - Series - Out of Phase: Pseudo Humbucker
-B+N - Series - In Phase: Strong output, but different feel than a humbucker. More of a P90-ish sound.
