Caught the sold out J. Mascis/Kurt Vile show on Saturday night at the Columbus Theater in Providence, RI. Wow... if you love indie guitar monsters, this was the place to be. J played solo, although the full version of Dinosaur Jr. is supporting Vile on other shows on this latest tour.

I had never seen Kurt Vile before, and I saw Dino Jr. way back in the Boston Rock heyday, so it was a relatively new experience. I would post some video, but I've learned that although my phone is great for many things, it is terrible for recording shows. I don't even bother anymore... I just kick back, take a pic or two, and enjoy the moment.

For me, the highlight of J's set was his amazing cover of Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You" and he played the entire set on an old Gibson cutaway acoustic with a humbucker jammed into it. Man... the guy can rip. Incredible to hear the tone he gets out of that thing, and the ease in which he plays.

Kurt Vile is a fairly new road for me, and he is definitely an acquired taste. His music grows on me more and more, and his guitar skills are outstanding. I could never mimic his fingerpicking style though, it's almost like Knofler's and Andy from PGS. More thumb than anything else, with the hand braced against the pickguard below the strings. His acoustic songs were really tremendous.

I counted at least 12 different guitars used in his set: 5 different acoustics (Martins), Jazzmasters, Jaguars, a Fender XII in CAR, Les Paul, a banjo.

    Great show, glad I went...

I'm a huge fan of Dinosaur Jr. and Mascis. Not as familiar with Kurt as I should be though. Sounds like a great show!

Great line-up, much envy. Mascis has some new tunes on the local public radio station, glad to hear he's still got it. Kurt Vile is so easy to like. "Saturday came around and I said who's this stupid clown blocking the bathroom sink?" I hear ya man.

Love Dino Jr.! Kurt Vile has been a recent favorite of mine too. Also that joint album with him and Courtney Barnett, "Lotta Sea Lice," I've been blowing it up lately.

Yes, I really liked "Over Everything" and I've always loved Courtney's stuff. What a great pairing (and I love that they say, "No... not THAT Kurt and Courtney...").

My wife has been begging me to learn "Pretty Pimpin'" and I'm like... seriously?

Kurt has been posting some good clips on his Instagram page... some side-stage vids of J playing, and some on-stage footage of him playing with Dino Jr. They seem to really get along well and complement each other on stage.

This is probably stereotypical but was it freakin loud!? ;)

Or tamed down a little bit for solo acoustic

Nice! Truthfully, I’m a bigger Kurt fan than J but seeing together is even better.
