Not that anyone appointed me to give an award for the best metaphor in this thread, but I am awarding it to the one where a bar owner does some renovations

Legally they own the bar, but if no one drinks there they have a problem. I think the 2 sides of this debate are summed up in the analysis of ownership and goodwill

I think the disgruntled voices on here sound like the barflies in Moe's Tavern on The Simpsons who say they 'like the dank' when he tries to lighten up the place. In truth, maybe a new owner would love all those barflies cleared out and a new snazzy high spending customer come in consuming fancy cocktails with high margins.... But will those customers come into a bar with a picture of a bsb tele hanging over the door? And if he gets rid of all the regulars...

    Metaphor OVEREXTENDED

Some people in this thread sound too needy. I think of the forum as a blackboard in class I can write something on. I have to right to it ever being read, or not wiped off by a teacher. Chill out!

Yeah. Regulars here have been grieving the passing of the site "the way it used to be" forEVER now.

You can do that, or you can look with positive anticipation to what is to come....

I want to complain about those damn Millennials and their ridiculous sense of entitlement. Because I really enjoy irony.

Another site I belong to sold to "Carbon Media" and the same thing happened. Apps and functions quit working & although the previous owners was retained he lost control of fixing things.
The members started a thread like this and eventually things got fixed but the site lost its feel.
I have been thought this before. A company gets boght out or goes public with stock and things fall apart and are not the same.

The TDPRI is a very different beast from the early days.

When Paul was the ‘webmaster’ things would get done professionally and properly despite the TDPRI being a ‘hobby’ for him.

It’s now gone from a hobby site to a commercially run site and the nature of the annual
prize draw this year was an indication of that.

I received a sterile email inviting me to upgrade my membership to enter the draw. I did make a $25 contribution - because I do get $25 worth of value out of the site annually - but I’ve accepted it’s changed.

I am anxious about the security of the site (the regular spam bombs are an indication to me that the security of the TDPRI is not what it should be) but there is little point reporting my concerns as clearly no-one reads the Forum Problems pages.

Stick with it my friend. I’ve met you personally and know you’re one of the good guys and would hate a TDPRI without you.

    :) Peter

Good post btw. Thank you for a bit of humour amid all this doom and gloom.

That’s my main concern, that it might be shut down. I was on another site that was sold and all of the users were locked out overnight without any explanation.

TDPRI is a community of users, operated by people that do their best to keep it up and running.
I cannot fathom the idea of crapping all over people for giving us a place to visit and mingle for free... maybe that's just me!

For those that are not in the business of site administration, you don't have a clue at what goes on behind the scenes and what they have to face day in and day out. Constant troll attacks, constant security attacks, server failures, DNS failures, OS updates that secure the OS and break everything else, and now attacks from it's own members.

When that happens, there's nothing you can do, so it's really not worth worrying about.

You should do an internet search on what some of these forums bring in for their owners. I DO have a clue, and believe me, the headaches are worth it for these big companies that take over forums like this. Please don't weep for GearTalk Network. They do just fine.

Also, people who say what you just did don't seem to realize that the owners of GearTalk Network are monetizing YOU. The content that every "free" member contributes to this site is the way the owners make advertising dollars. YOUR clicks feed THEM, not the other way around. And there are people here who pay as well. Why doesn't anyone ever consider that at all?

99% of my time on here is spent scrolling thru it on a phone watching The Simpsons with my daughter

I think it scrolls better on a phone since the update. I am not going to say it looks a micron brighter than it used to on here, as well

Speaking of The Simpsons, I am not going to reference the Albequerque Isotopes as I keep seeing 'Telecaster Guitar Forum' here and there

Please no one change the name! Me hungy!

Anyone on Reddit? If there was enough interest, I would volunteer to mod a sub there (like /r/tdpri if it isn't already taken). I'm already modding the leftyguitarists sub there which is relatively pain-free. So I would be willing to mod another. I realize there are plenty of guitar subs there (/r/guitar, /r/guitarporn, /r/guitars, etc.) but we can create our own with just us members from here.

I don't wish to take anything away from this site and I'm certainly not looking to create a cous. Lord knows it continues to be an excellent source for all guitar stuff and sometimes a Tele or 2 makes an appearance. But if some are looking to find another place, I'm willing to help provide it.
