Well, thanks to Cyclone Gabrielle, it's raining and windy here again. Power outages, roads closed, bridges out, homes destroyed, firefighters missing/hurt.

We now have a National State of Emergency declared.

Full story here...

Where I am, it's been raining heavily all night, but not much wind (so far) so we're good at the moment.

Not so good for many others though, friends in Auckland are dealing with the second flooding of their house in 2 weeks.

Update - I'm not sure if news of this is out there in the big wide world, but it hasn't really stopped raining here yet.

Where I am, it's currently raining and very windy, has been for days.

Nothing compared to the devastation elsewhere in the country though. People are dying. There are reports of sightings of more bodies floating. This is terrible.

We are OK here, but friends are currently unable to contact relatives who live in the worst affected areas. Comms are heavily affected now, as the cell-towers back-up batteries increasingly fail. :(

Hundreds of people have been rescued from their roofs, with helicopters and boats.

One of my team from work is a volunteer for Urban Search & Rescue, and he's deploying in my local area for 'welfare and reconnaissance' work today.

We also had a 6.3 earthquake last night, which was felt over the entire country. We wobbled about a bit on the couch, but it didn't wake the cats.

Now we have a severe thunderstorm warning too.

Thanks all.

We and the cats, chickens and the guitars are all dry and safe, but there is quite a lot of local flooding, some coastal communities are cut-off, some roads/bridges are out.

This a couple of miles from me:

But any issues we have here are tiny compared to the devastation going on further north.

We're getting live crosses to NZ on our daily news to see the devastation.

Those cyclones/lows have been sliding wide, past us down the east coast and hitting you guys... not good.

Been a rather wet year down this way.... stay dry old mate...;)

Oh wow terrible to hear! The US news hasn't mentioned it that I've seen, right now it's full of, well, lots of stuff we can't talk about here.

So this is like a huge monsoon in the middle of your driest season? Crazy.

Wow, that’s really severe conditions and that’s saying the least. I hope it lets up soon and without any further casualties. Please stay safe. I wish better days for you and your loved ones soon.

Lot of devastation there. The news channels here have been covering it.
