Can anyone confirm if this Tele is Alder or Ash? It’s Daniel Donato’s 60s custom shop. Headstock logo I would say is a later 60s which points to Alder and since a solid color. F760E78E-241F-4B61-AFF6-D1D52D309379.jpeg EB69C1D8-9B8F-4490-BF26-155547798C58.jpeg

That body looks like ash to me. Ash has an inconsistent grain where alder is typically the opposite, both fine guitar body tone wood.

Isn't that just a 60's custom shop model? If so it's alder. Great guitars.

The knot near the string holes makes it look like pine.

Ash almost always gets a clear finish. Alder is almost always painted. Pine has knots, like what I think I'm seeing in the photo.

The picture quality is so poor it hard to be sure though.

Even with that swirl of grain, from the back pic IMO it's the fairly straight, tight grain of alder. Just because it's a 60s-looking guitar, I wouldn't make assumptions about the body wood. The CS often puts non-traditional features together in the same guitar.

Definitely looks like a knot or a burn. Unfortunately no photos exist and this was a screen grab from a YouTube video.

I'm in the pine camp too, mostly because that knot and curls around it.

On the other hand, then there real smooth aldery areas too.

A bit fuzzy picture though, tough one.

The wear on the upper bout looks a little like ash. I'm not crazy about the location of the knot. Are we sure it's a CS body? Could it be GFS paulownia?

No, it’s his CS Tele. Many interviews to back that up.

Looks like alder to me. The pinkish hue, not much grain and knotty alder is cheaper than clear alder and looks just like that.

I agree, hard to tell from those pics but appears like Alder to me.
This experimental project was Alder, but has a lot of swirly like Ash:

    Hate knots!!!!
Used to walk past a drying lumber yard to high school and learnt from the guys there. Pine knots inevitably work their way out. Beware. I'd even sand that guitar to see it better. If if it's a knot it's not on.

Don’t be an Ash! I’m definitely getting grumpy in my alder age.

Its guess work, but I would opt for sugarpine or alder. Definitely not ash, as it lacks the porous character

Edit: internet suggests it's a '62 CS Reissue:
    https://equipboard.com/pros/daniel-donato?gear=guitars

Edit 2: The only thing I cannot wrap my head around is, that Fender CS would build a knot into a guitar and that went past QA

    Pineers vs aldernative universe.

    Could be both.

I'll try to get some sleep.
