I took the MXR Dyna Comp off my board because it was noisy and replaced it with a Wampler Ego. The Ego is just as noisy.

    is there a quiet compressor?

I tried the Ego and found it noisy as well.

I then got Keeley Compressor Plus and find it much more quiet with my rig. At least I can get more usable range out of it before noise kicks in.

there is no quiet comp....you can find some that does less noise.that should be a quality one without heavy squash.i've got the much underrated from guitarists EBS Multycomp Guitar Edition and i can say that has the half noise than MXR Dyna Comp that i had in past

JHS Pulp’N’Peel is dead silent. Effectrode LA 1A is silent. And it sounds exactly right. But it’s a bigger footprint so you have to make space on your board. But it is worth it.

Any compressor is going to get hissy when you turn up the sustain. There is no way to jack up the progressive decline of a sustained note without raising the noise floor with it (from what I've read). I use an Ego compressor for presence and tone enhancement. I do have the attack turned up to squelch spikes but keep the sustain almost all the way down. It's very quiet. Luckily my guitars all sustain as much as I need without help from the Ego. YMMV

Here's what I've been using, the Orange Kongpressor. It's very quiet.

The Keeley Tone Workstation is very quiet.
It gives me compression, dirt and more dirt without the 20210418_111726.jpg 20210418_111752.jpg noise.

Boss CP-1X is the quietest I’ve tried. I haven’t had a lot, but I liked it better than the Cali76 Compact, which is saying something.

I built a saffron squeeze clone once that was dead quiet ... then again it has better filtering than the dyna/ross

I’ve got the wampler ego mini and it’s quiet. It’s all in the settings, mess around with the knobs.

I use an EQ pedal in place of a compressor. I stagger the six levers (pushing the low bass and dropping the highest treble) and get the jangle-y sound I want from my 12-string.

The alternative is to lower your noise floor by playing in middle position, use humbuckers or noiseless pickups, etc., since it is the noise from your guitar that is getting amplified.

The Sound on Sound review commented on this too. Maybe because it’s a multi-band? Mine is notably quieter than my other compressor (which I also like), an Xotic SP.

Boss CP-1X is without doubt my favorite these days and quiet is its boast.

A truly great compressor which I am sure the boutique crowd are scrambling to copy. ;)

I run a gate all the time. I play single coil guitars, I generally use some kind of compression and I really believe in a gate. It's a game changer.
