On fender style guitars I generally prefer a solid color, or a very plain alder body. Not a fan of ash grain in 99% of cases. Just looks like cheap stair tread to me. I only like flame maple on a PRS. And mostly it’s got to be the super skinny and straight kind. The only guitars I’ve ever liked quilt maple on are BC Rich Mockingbirds, and Jerry’s Wolf. Don’t generally like flame tops on Les Pauls. When I bought mine, one of the reasons I chose it was because it had the plainest top of any of the models in stock. I do like birds eye necks. Birds eye maple is really cool. I once called PRS to see if they’d build me a plain top McCarty. The guy on the phone told me no. He also told me that’s not what they do. And he wasn’t all that nice about it. He got a little nicer when I assured him it was not a prank call, and I was 100% serious. But not a lot nicer. It was kinda funny.
