Here's an example of something I've been seeing repeatedly for a couple of years now. This one comes from an ad on Facebook but I see this nonsense in numerous places.

"Over the years I have trained well over 2,054 men of all ages......"

I just don't get it. The number 2,054 is a VERY specific number. It's not a number that indicates a general range. It's a number that has pinpoint accuracy.

So does it not make more sense to say "Over the years I have trained well over 2,000 men of all ages......".

What is going on with people's thinking. How is this a 'thing' that I keep seeing. How can a person type this and not look at it and think to themselves, "This seems silly". It's making me cuckoo!!

    Now, get off my lawn!

    Clearly they trained 2055 men.

You're likely right about the world becoming dummerer. Certainly advertising is. I often hear words mis-pronounced. I wonder if it was a mistake or a marketing ploy to make me think about the ad longer than I ought to.

That could be the case with your example as well.

I once saw a bar advertising an upcoming live music night. The guest was a band called "Giv'ner". At first I thought what a stupid name, then I chuckled to myself for a while, then I shared the joke.

Before long I had spread the name of that band to many people. We all assume that the band was a cover band that played high energy Rock & I decided that if I ever saw them in town again I'd like to see who would pick such a stupid name.

    So.... Essentially the perfect name.

Probably the same in saying something "Stupid" in an ad. At first it's stupid, then you wonder how something so stupid got past what is assumed to be at least a few "critical thinkers", then you tell people about the stupid thing & everyone is aware of the ad.

    Perfectly stupid ad.

YES and I did not even read your post, just the title.

After reading the post people sometimes feel like they need to justify their abilities. However the extra 54 people don't really matter to me. Just tell me you have trained over 2K and I am good.

The engineer type brain will give an exact number.
The generalist or possibly AD brain will give an approximation.
The media focused brain will question either the political leaning or background of both to determine if advertising dollars are available.
But the man of deep learning with too much time on his hands may question everything.

I'd rather train thousands of individuals and leave you to imagine 1,000-99,999

Edit: Yes, I believe so! Unfortunately!!!

I often see this sort of thing without the words that indicate 'well over' a certain number. It's just something like "I've trained over 2,054 men...."...and that's exactly what I think....so you've trained 2,055 people. Using 'well over' puts us more into the realm of 2,056 people I would think.

Yeah, I would have been clearer and stated "I have trained over 2054 and three quarter men..."

Yes, clearly, it is getting stupider and an integral part of that continuing degradation of intelligence and common sense is the misuse of data and statistics. Anyone with a calculator or a beginner's knowledge of Excel and a 4 year degree is suddenly a genius. Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't have had that 3rd cup of coffee today.

Since "stupider" is a comparative adjective which by definition is used to compare two nouns, I believe it is more correct to ask "is the world getting more stupid."

Just kidding. The answer is yes.

Well......... Anything that's better is 100% better even if it's a minor improvement.

Much of the world is becoming more and more reliant on data and computers . I realize there is a fine line between ignorance and reliance . Since reliance on something else tends to lessen or remove the need for making personal decisions , individual knowledge will decrease proportionately . The bright spot is that it appears to me that there will always be a segment of society that will retain their curiosity and desire to learn what they can/want .

It depends on who you talk to. But also, when does a boy become a man? Could he have trained a boy who is now a man, and does that count?

To the original post, remember that 49.9% of all people have a less than average IQ, but the fact that people are getting stoopider means the people who were smart to begin with are getter smarter.
