Is the only difference between F/Trem spaced humbuckers the spacing of polepieces?

I seem to have a recollection that F/Trem spaces pickups can also be slightly physically larger than standard spacing. I have an Agile Singlecut that has F spaced Dimarzio transitions in it and it required rooting. I think I've also seen this issue with pickguards where people physically enlarged the pickup to fit a Trem/F spaced pickup in the guitar.

Is my recollection incorrect or only true for certain brands?

    Depends.

Seymour Duncan Trembuckers are physically wider with wider pole spacing.

Dimarzio F-spaced are normal width with wider pole spacing.
