I recently purchased this Tele on reverb from a seller who custom built it from parts. It was listed as American neck with American body. I've already discovered the body is Mexican (not that big of deal, has American hand wound pickups), but I'm concerned the neck might not be legit American. Upon receiving it i noticed it was 21 frets instead of the normal American 22.

I contacted the seller and he said he bought the neck off eBay as an "American telecaster FSR" and sent me the below pics from before he put it on. Any way of telling if it's legit?

those tuning machines do not look correct for an American Fender neck.

Yeah, I had the same thought, but I suppose those could have been replaced at some point.

also i am not seeing the usual "metal disc" thing which i believe is part of the Micro-Tilt adjustment system. that should be visible in your 3rd pic. where the skunk stripe terminates at the heel end of the neck.

I definitely think it’s fake. The serial number indicates it’s a 93. Fender put the serial number on the front of the headstock on the American Telecaster in that year. It looks more like a Japanese neck that was doctored up to be given an American serial number and they washed off the Made or Crafted in Japan decal near the back heel. I could be wrong. Not an expert, but if it doesn’t gel, it ain’t aspic.

I noticed this as well. Any idea if any of the special runs put it on the back? Like a 50s reissue or something?

Any idea of the serial was on the back of any of these?

I agree with reply #4, it should have a metal "micro-tilt" disk where the round plug is at the end of the "skunk stripe", so I would guess the neck is NOT a MIA.

Note: I think, (not sure though) that some MIM necks have the "micro tilt disk", even though MIM Tele's, and Strat's aren't equipped with micro tilt adjusters. Nice looking Tele though...

Any idea if those existed in '93?

I hope you did not pay very much for that. Can you send it back? The neck has a plastic insert at the truss rod adjustment. I've only seen that on the super cheap Chinese stuff.

Interesting, so the made in Japan theory might be correct?

Quite possibly, is there a date stamp on the neck heel?

The seller seems very receptive to everything, so should be resolvable. Feel bad for him too though. He bought the parts off eBay as American parts.

I'm with Nick Fanis. I don't like the looks of the back of the headstock. I don't think it is a Fender neck. JMHO

The pictures were taken by the original seller. I received it as the completed guitar. I haven't taken it apart to check but it doesn't appear so on the photos

Considering the seller thought he had genuine Fender parts, it doesn’t seem like it would’ve mattered either way.
