    Hi guys,

A bit of a noobie question but,

I've just got a brand new TM from a big dealer after playing my Teles cold for many years. So I'm not used to using amps.

The trouble is, no matter which channels I use, if all the tone controls (treble, mid and bass) are down to 1 then, irrespective of what the volume is set at there is no output.

Surely the summed tone controls don't determine the volume.

Have I been sold a dud?

It's a pain having to send it back as they already sent me a 68 Princeton by mistake, which I had to send back

When you turn your tone controls down, you are bleeding those frequencies to ground. So it makes sense that there's not enough signal getting passed through to drive the speaker.

Why would you want all your tone controls on 1?

That is normal, and it is how "real" BF/SF amps operate, as well.

That's the way the tone controls on a real Twin Reverb work so I guess they made the Tonemaster work like a real Twin.

They should post a warning in the owner's manual.

It's modeled to work just like the tube version, so yes, standard operating procedure.

It's not the correct technical reality of the circuit, but for ease of use you can see each tone control as an independent volume for each frequency band width, thus no sound when everything is at zero, and you can actually increase the gain when maxing out the tone controls.

    Wow, great replies guys.

stnmtthw, I don't want to set all my tones at 1, I was just a little worried that it behaved like that.

They haven't modelled smashed tubes as well have they if you through it down the stairs?

Talk about attention to detail :)

It seems that the Tonemasters have a really common problem. The tubes and transformers fall out of them during shipping. Send it back for one that isn't missing those very important parts.

I bet the Tone Master naysayers were devastated when they came into the thread and saw that it wasn't broken. After all, these are going to be unreliable, cheaply made throwaway amps, right?
