I find it AMAZING that MASH could present daily life in a war zone in a comical way ... at a time when the country was agonizing over Vietnam ... and be so universally beloved. Just goes to show what good writers and actors can pull off.

I also find "Hogan's Heroes" amazing ...
Tell me that TODAY you could make a sitcom about a WWII **** POW camp that has adorable and funny Germans.
Not to mention the stereotyped little Frenchy and Richard Dawson as the Brit.
And of course the women of negotiable virtue ...
You and the show would be cancelled immediately!

Amen!
I don’t like to be reminded to laugh.
I like deciding that for myself.
That’s probably why I watch almost no TV.
I like watching sports on TV, that and Law and Order are about it for me. Let me be clear, I watch old reruns of L&O, I positively can't stand for a minute the new 2022 model. When I want to take a nap, I put L&O on the screen, lean back, and before they can get to the autopsy, I'm sound asleep.

Raymond Chandler once said (on authoring The Big Sleep) that one of the murders that occurred even HE didn't know who committed it.
Yeah, that is the chauffeur who was in love with Carmen and ends up in the driver's seat of a car that has been mysteriously driven off the end of a pier. I forget his name. But the plot of The Big Sleep is so complicated that it is not surprising that Chandler lost track of it. And then Haruki Murakami borrowed the plot for Wild Sheep Chase, which some people call "The Big Sheep." The main element they share is that the main character is looking for one thing, but everybody keeps asking him if he is looking for something else, so eventually he has to look for that too.

My wife knows I was a fan of the '70s TV series "Kung Fu."
So she thoughtfully got me DVDs of all 3 seasons for Christmas a few years ago.
Started watching it, and then stopped before the end of the first season.
They sit now gathering dust in the bookcase.
Back in the day, my younger self couldn't wait to "tune in" and see this week's episode.
But today - even without commercials - it really falls flat. Sad.
It falls even flatter for me now that I know how Keith Carradine died.

Crazy…

My father in law was a career marine, enlisted at the end of WWII, at 17, served in Korea once and Vietnam twice, retired with three stars.

He loved MASH, thought it was a great show and a great depiction of the humanity and variety of people in war.

I haven't watched it in ages. Probably has not aged well

Not to mention they were originally casting Bruce Lee as the lead, but he was "too oriental looking."
Instead, they got a drug-addled wackadoo who did stuff like showing up with his head shaved (not in script).
Still, the fortune cookie wisdom had a definite impact on my youthful psyche.
And I still tell my kids "Focus, Grasshopper!"

It Varies.....
I hated it! Hawkeye was the most smug, sanctimonious character on the air. What a douchebag.

Yep!

At first he was a Groucho Marx character then as you said..... a douchebag. Can't stand him!

Woody was genius to cast him in Crimes and Misdemeanors! I don't think he was acting! LOVE Woody's eye rolling!

MASH has various acts.

ACT I
- the lunacy of the Henry Blake years. This era was just pure over-the-top comedy. Funny as hell.

ACT II
- Potter and BJ arrive. Still funny, but the comedy is now realistic, not as broad and over-the-top. And serios episodes started to become more the norm.

ACT III
- Margaret is no longer the enemy years. BJ is far too serious. Frank was better than Winchester. The whole show became far too serious. Still some fine episodes, but the show really was no longer the MASH of the movie or the MASH of the Henry Blake years.

First season or so it was great with the Henry Blake clique festivals and Trapper. After they split it got overly preachy and high level propaganda.

Big Bang Theory has its moments and it the politically incorrect humor that makes it great!

...and like so many of her other roles, Laurie Metcalf is just perfect.
