    Edit

Sorry. And my apologies to the people or person who responded below.

I wrote this yesterday, and today somehow fumbled and posted it as a thread instead of a response to another thread.

    Sorry.

The original post is still below. And added to the original thread.

    …trapped?

I’m sitting here listening to the Tedeschi Trucks Band (Live From the Fox Oakland) and it reminded me of something Matt Schofield said on That Pedal Show.

He talked about staying competitive on the festival circuit, and said he might need to go large, with a more of a big band production. He cited the Tedeschi Trucks Band as an example of something that lands with sizeable impact on the audience.

And that made me recall recent comments here about Joe Bonamassa's big band sound and his (alleged) full on onslaught approach to shredding the blues, etc.

Which made me wonder, do you think he’s trapped, caught up in a juggernaut that he possibly can't control? Much like people say Jerry Garcia was with the machine that the Grateful Dead became?

Perhaps he plays what and how he wants, or perhaps he plays what and how he feels the machine dictates?

    Dunno. Just wondering out loud.

Somewhere in here - can’t find it exactly right now.

Bonamassa is kind of in a niche all his own, he seems to be doing pretty well as a self-contained production that doesn't need to get tagged on to festivals and such to make his living. And the guy definitely knows how to market himself-or he hired somebody who knows what they're doing.

I heard him say on some you tube video that he has to play in concertfast because that what his audience comes and pays to hear. Seems like it’s working out well for him. He can play tasteful any old time. Good for Joe.

It’s interesting. If he decides he wanted to do, I don’t know, the music or mike stern, would he be able to? Or if he wanted to do South African kwela music? Or reggae?

Chris Thile can do an album of Bach, but could bonamassa not do a blues rock thing?

And this is not a slam on him. He has stated that his purpose is to play the blues to the fans. If you don’t like it fine if you do like it fine.

But can you do that for 20 years? Some did. But not as many as you think.

I just get the feeling from his interviews that he pretty much does what he wants...
