So my groceries came to $11.76. I handed the cashier $22.01. I said out of $22.01.Was that overly optimistic of me? The cashier looked puzzled, handed me back my $2.01, then rang me up and gave me $8.24 change.

Do you try to make your change round out, or have you given up by now?? Is his something whose time has past, like landlines and writing cursive?

I figured the cashier could just enter $22.01 in the reg, and let the machine do the math, but i really did not want to explain myself.

Ask someone at McDonalds or Sonic or damn near anywhere how many ounces are in a large drink.

No one knows, and a large drink can be anywhere from 16 oz to 164 oz. OK, the 164 is bit of an overstatement.

Lots of folks in Japan try to do this. The cashiers don’t have any problems with it. They just input the amount you gave them into the register and it kicks back the appropriate change.

That said, I usually don’t bother. All pocket change goes into a jar at the end of the day, and that funds my gear purchases.

I used to do that, and I used to once be the person who would calculate change out in my head and then count it out.

I haven't carried cash for probably 20+ years now, and I don't miss it to be honest.

Most people can't work numbers in their head today, most don't even know the simple process of figuring out simple percentages. Asking them to make change in their heads, just ain't gonna happen. You can't blame them either, they use some form of calculator to do most of their figuring all of the time. There's really no need to.

My wife keeps a lot of change on hand, I stand quietly by while she gives someone a five dollar bill, three singles, two quarters, two dimes and three pennies for her purchase. The line behind us, well they don't do nearly as well with it as I do!

I'm very tired. Not sure on my math. Blaming the tequila. And a full days work.... Or the other way around.

But if I am not mistaken you expected 10$ and a quarter back from that fancy move.

Optimistic. Indeed. Yeah, could let the machine do it. It would do it better than I could right this moment.

I'd hand over $12. Or a $20, take the change and get the hell out of the way.
Hate to say it, but yeah. $22.01 and I'd duck, expecting a smack down.

Or a very well deserved hairy eyeball look that says "smart@$$"!
My wife would smack me for such a move anyway.

    Wow, not carry cash?

What do you use when you find those killer deals at yard sales or even that c-list thing that all the kids are using now a days?.. I mean, when you could actually meet people in person?

Can't expect most of the checkers to be able, or willing, to do such "high level" calculations. That might be like asking them to write in script.

Personally, haven't paid for anything in cash... for years.

I don’t understand not carrying cash. I have a debit card that I use for gas only. I don’t have any credit cards. Unless it’s a tank of gas, all of my purchases are cash.

I went to a donut shop this morning. It has been there since I was in high school. Oddly enough it has a drive thru. I rolled up in the Jeep this morning and the first thing they said was "Hey, we miss you, I was wondering if you were okay." I ordered my donuts and coffee and I told the lady to please put a tip on the ATM card purchase. I'm a New Yorker and I don't forget to tip. But cash? Very seldom anymore.
