Is it just me or is red not a well loved tele color.

1990 MIJ '62 custom. Sound just as red as it looks. This summer changed it back to 3 brass saddles for a bit mellower spank.

A Fender Guitar Dealer once told me that Fender bases their production colors on current model automobile paint colors. Don't know how accurate that is but it makes marketing sense being we see those colors every day on the street. Those daily exposures get set in our brain. Red is dangerous as it blends in with everything and mixes as a base color thus less red cars. More accidents and traffic stops with red.

I'm not really into red guitars, BUT, I found this Squier Bullet Telecaster in Red Metalflake for $149.98 and fell in love. You can't really see the metalflake in the pic, but it's stunning! I bought just as a wall hanger...

As did I. But I was really surprised at how well it played and how well it was set up. I didn’t need to tweak a thing. I also thought I’d need to change the pickups. I was truly surprised at how well the pickups sound, with them set low. Sounds much like a classic Tele. But I love the sound of the Bootstrap Palo Duros I installed with a 4-way switch on my BSB Affinity Tele 2020 model. I’ll probably get the itch to do that on this one too… but, for now, I’ll live with the standard 3-way setup and let it be for awhile.

Certain colors seem to belong on certain guitars, as the Customer for that guitar is also a fan of certain colors. So, you will see a lot of red Gibson ESs and Fender Strats. I think it just so happens that most guys who follow the beat of their own drum, and thus play Telecasters and Esquires and T types, also go their own way and avoid the red color. Red is the color of the conformist, at least in guitars.

For the record, I have 3 red Fender Stratocasters and only 2 red Fender Telecasters. Might be the only color I have more of in S style than T style. In all the T type projects I've ever done (scores) I've never finished nor assembled on a red T type body.

Really? Even when you restrict your gaze to Teles? Seems to me BSB is the default Tele colour. Conformist is such a trigger word.

You don't see too many of them, it's true. Never thought much about it, though.

My first electric guitar was a bright red Epiphone SG. It was like $229 and I loved it when I got it. I was 15. Within a year I had tired of it and graduated to one of Epiphone's nicer LPs. I swore off red guitars forever.

Then 5-6 years later I was strolling my local music store—Peeler Music in Toledo, Ohio—around mid-December in 2005. I'd never liked Telecasters. They always struck me as old guy guitars (ha!). But my eyes fell on a Candy Apple Red Classic Series '60s telecaster. I plugged it in and it was like the heavens opened. That neck pickup really had me going. They were running their end of year clearance and, being that I'd spent a lot of my time and money there, the owner worked with me a little extra. I think I paid $425? 16 years later I still have that guitar. I've been hot and cold on it over the years, but I'm absolutely smitten with the color these days. I also only recently discovered Muddy Waters played the same color. It would seem I'm in good company.

I have built this at the mod shop a few times - just never pulled the trigger.

The painted headstock is no longer an option. Then I noticed the burgundy metallic color. And I discovered I like rosewood necks. And...

Fiesta Red was a color created by the Ford Motor Company. It was a shade of red that came on their mid 1950's Ford Thunderbirds. I have seen over the years several shades of Fiesta Red. Some are a little brighter and some a semi shade darker. However, you know it's Fiesta Red
