Is Iggy Pop More Just a Cult Personality Than a Musician?

Or, actual genuine performer/vocalist...with a songwriter history...you know what I mean.

I know Iggy so well, as we all probably do...kinda.

But if pressed, I couldn't name more than one or two actual songs I connect him to.

He's kinda like a shiny, blingy, but empty, container with me.
Where with many other punk bands and/or personalities, there's a lot of substance behind the personality, there's a lot of memorable music to fill the container of 'them'.

Am I all backwards here, am I totally missing something?
It seems for the bark (personality) he has, there should be more bite (memorable music) to back it up.

I can name more than a few songs but I’m a fan so that seems reasonable to me.

I think he's a genius, and hugely important. I Wanna Be Your Dog on its own is one of the templates of all modern rock music, while being thoroughly outside of the normal realm of things. Not many artists have achieved that.

You can make the "I don't get it" argument with any artist that you don't know in depth. I dare say I do it all the time.

To me he is one of those songwriters who did it his way, in his voice, and kept it "rock and roll", while so much music that falls under that label would be more suited to supermarkets and elevators.

The twin pillars of the cosmos are shirtless Iggy Pop and shirtless Matt Pike. Be careful what you wish for.

You clearly haven't heard the Stooges. Listen to those three albums (The Stooges, Funhouse, and Raw Power- the recent ones are interesting but don't really count) and get back to us.

    He's a performance artist.
I'm not a huge fan, but I think he's got talent.
I've always been more into the music than the show.
I suspect he's my alter ego.
It appears his plan is working for him.

I like your analysis. Rock 'n' Roll isn't always (rarely?) art.

If one can’t name more than two ‘connection’ songs about any given artist, then one really isn’t able to make the call on personality/music ratios. The personal anecdotes only reveal personal exposure and background, preferences and biases.

That said I’m totally an expert. So no, are you crazy? Music first and always. :)

Those three are the quickest way to illustrate the talent at work. Maybe you can argue that he peaked early, but there is plenty of great stuff later on- it's just not laid out quite so neatly as the Stooges catalog.

I always wished Nick C. had done an entire album of Stooges covers.
