not the same "squire"

these older Squiers are a different beast than the current Squiers. I believe thye're from when Fender started importing Japanese copies to combat sales of other Japanese strat copies. I odn't believe they are equivalent o the current "entry level" guitars marlketed with the Squier name.

If someone else knows more (or otherwise) my apologies.

"IMHO" as they say

Craigslist is notorious for the $350 "minty fresh 1993 FENDER by squier STRATOCASTER, but $800 is a tall order.

Maybe Mark Davis knows if that thing really is collectible.

I picked up an 80's Squire Bullet for 50 bucks at a flea market a few months back. Weird lil' sucker. Sunburst finish, Got 1 volume and 1 tone knob, three pickups and what looks to be a 3/4 sized strat body and one of the best tele necks I've played.
Heavy as anything but plays very well after set-up and sounds really nice.
Personall, I wouldn't pay the going rate for any of these "vintage"-collector-MIJ-Squires...but....after playing this one, I sort of see what the fuss is about. The MIJ 80's squires were pretty well done instruments.

Thats a little high, those guitars are collectible, and that price will be correct in the near future. They are great guitars, and the quality is as good as any.

A few people I know that own the 82-84 JV's say they are the best Strats they own reguardless of price.

I had an MIJ JV strat, was it nice? Yes. $800 nice...no way.

The MIM Jimmie Vaughan strat blows it away, at least the neck. The JV's had good US made pups. If ever I want a nice strat, it will be a used Jimmie Vaughan at $350 or so, with a pup upgrade (how about some Fender Cray pups?). That would slay an MIJ JV strat IMO.

my 84 squire

I sent in some used string packages to a Fender contest in 84., forgot all about it.
Came home one evening and my wife said " you got something in the mail"
I couldn't believe it ..a Fender box with a Squire Strat 'black with rosewood neck. I've never won anything like that before, or since. I was so excited!
I was playing full-time then, and I played it that night. I've been playing it ever since. A lot of guitars have come and gone since then, but I don't think I'll ever part with this one.
With the way prices are going on older Fenders, I can see it happening on these. They are as good as any.

If it was a JV maybe, but not an SQ. Yours is worth about half that now, but who knows in another 10-20 years what it will be worth.

guys are literally paying $1000.~$2000.oo for old Grecos and Tokais now...and more for some models... so it was only a matter of time. I have a few JVs...not the Jimmy Vaughns... and they are real nice guitars...none cost me anywhere near $800.oo...my ExTrad was in that ballpark though...but in Japan it has just about doubled in value since. Some are paying crazy money for rosewood teles nowadays too so who knows where it`s gonna end...but I gotta wonder why a 1983 guitar was hardly ever played as the seller describes...mine were all palyed a lot by previous owners and honestly I`d rather have one that was played, you know unless somebody wants to just hang it on the wall `n stuff.

If it's better than a Fender, and a great guitar, why not?

I've got a '85 MIJ Squier, and it's a fabulous guitar. Let the buyer decide.

And let's not play the alphabet game...

That kind of neck (Squier paddle with bullet) went for ~$180 on ebay just a few months back, so I'm guessing that the whole guitar is worth more

If that was a JV series in very good condition I might consider giving 600-800 for it. SQ's are worth 300-500 depending on condition and finish.

Sort of side-jacking my original post....

...but can someone explain the Squire alphabet soup to me? Are these 2 letter designations all the start of the serial numbers? I think JV=Japan, but that's about as far as I've gotten.

By the way, I've got a '98 (I think) Squire, "CY" serial number Standard Series Strat that I like pretty darned well, but I'll be dipped before I'll believe its worth more than a couple hundred dollars. If anyone can tell me anything about these Squires like mine, I'd really appreciate it. I'm sure its bone stock since I won it new in a contest, but it seems to have fairly hot pickups.

Thanks all.
