Is a stock Maxon OD9 the same as Analogman True Vintage 808 mod?

That is to ask, if the pedal already has the JRC4558 chip and the 808 output resistors, and the same distorting diodes, then isn't it already the same as Analogman's True Vintage (Brown) modded Tube Screamer?

If not, anyone know what's different in an OD9?

If it is different, is it worth it to get Mike to do the TV mod to the OD9?

Thanks,

I would like to know this as well because I just took an Ibanez TS9 and changed the output resistors to match an 808. Luckily mine had the 4558 in it already. If the Maxon comes configured that way I would've just bought that one for another $20!

This page from AnalogMan's site has info about the Maxon OD-9, scroll down a little past halfway down the page: http://www.analogman.com/ts9.htm Al

Thank you for the link, it was very informative. I think I made the right decision on my TS9, I'm not a buffer hater and the Maxon would have to be modded anyway to get it to 808 specs. That's assuming of course that you want to mess with it.....

Can anyone verify what needs to be modded in a Maxon OD9 to bring it to 808 specs?

Are the clipping diodes different? If so, how?

Are the output resistors different? If so, how?

Aside form the OD9 being true bypass, are there any other circuit differences?

What do these differences (if any) do to the sound?

Thanks for any info.

If you can tell in a blind test, the difference between an TS9 and a TS808 then you're a better man than me.

I have a stock TS9 replete with mojo chip from 84 (or is it 82..), a Keeley modded 808 with magic mods, plus "vintage" (snicker) JRC, and a maxon OD808

The biggest difference was between the keeley (similar idea to the Silver mod) and the other 2. Yes the bottom end was less flubby and there was more/less gain. but that was subtle.

Between the 808 and TS9? not much in it, maybe a "touch" grittier and more aggressive on the TS9 side and maybe "a hair" less compressed and more open/smooth on the 808.

subtle. and you have to be REALLY listening for it, and even then do i believe my ears because i was expecting to hear a difference?

I strongly suspect there could be as much difference between 2 different 808's from pure component tolerance ranges.

Any differences disappear in a band context.

I like the way my OD9 sounds as it is. I'm not trying to make it an 808 just because that's a trendy thing to do by players who read guitar forums.

I'm simply interested in how the OD9 differs from an 808 (or 808 mod) in terms of components or circuitry, and how that effects the sound if at all.

When I modded my TS9 to 808 specs by just changing the output resistors, I know there's more to it involving the clipping diodes, but I didn't do a blind test. I did however feel that after the mod it was more warmer and louder. But again it's all splitting hairs at the end of the day it probably doesn't matter. "Feel" is a hard thing to hear in a recording but I feel like, no pun intended, that the "feel" is much better now with the resistor changes.

This hobby is a lot like going down the rabbit hole....
