My Life is a great record, I've played it so many times. I like DeMent's quirkiness as an artist.
She writes great songs, and makes great albums. But that voice....it really doesn't hit you till you witness her performing live. Goosebumps...hair standing up on your arms...chills. There is the place deep inside you where the pitch and tone and emotion of her singing digs into your soul. The only time I have ever wept at a concert.
She's terrific. Her duets with John Prine are great too. BTW her husband, Greg Brown, is also a favorite and their daughters all sing too.
One night on the now-defunct Prairie Home Companion radio program she sat at the piano and sang a cover of Lefty Frizzell's That's the Way Love Goes. There's not a thing I would change about her interpretation of that country classic. She's very musical.
I would happily listen to Iris sing the phone book.
Love Iris Dement. Love Greg Brown. My kid was into the big-voice women that do the audition shows. I told her that they all sounded the same to me. I played "Our Town" for her.
Love Iris Dement and I’ve played with Greg Brown a bunch of times back in the late eighties and early nineties. Two great talents.
