I was recently reading an autobio by a recording engineer in New York in the 80s. One weekend, Jagger came in for some tracking. After a while, his dealer shows up with a film canister with a little of that and a little of that inside. The dealer was John Phillips.

According to the engineer, Jagger barely touched the stuff. Just one or two hits of this and that. He left the rest behind for the engineer.

Bill Bruford - Feels Good To Me, then the incredible One Of A Kind. Sadly, Allan Holdsworth left after this and the third album is not graced by his stellar talent.

So many that I agree with, that have already been mentioned.
I'll add some that have not been mentioned:
Dire Straits - Dire Straits(self-titled) and Communique
Sarah McLachlan - Touch and Solace
    America - America(self-titled) and Homecoming
Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left and Bryter Later
Manassas - Manassas and Down The Road

The Tubes: Self-titled debut / Young & Rich.

The first one's a great start, but Young & Rich has so much musical development, it sounds more like a 4th album.

The Tubes have been doing UK tours again these last few years. Worth catching, Fee's as mad as ever. No Re Styles anymore though, but I suppose she doesn't fancy appearing half naked at close to 70. :)

It's a purely musical thing and not a bromance, but it's the brilliant Bill Spooner I miss - The Tubes without him is like Focus without Jan Akkerman.

I just realized that I don't think I've ever heard This Was. Until a few weeks ago I thought Stand Up was their first album. I'll check it out tonight.

It's a good album - has a very different feel to Stand Up, probably due in part to the different guitarist, and it's understandably quite 'raw' in places, but a damn fine debut! It was actually my own introduction to the band while at college.

Rory Gallagher's first two. The second 'Deuce' is a lifetime favourite album and forever defined for me how a Strat should sound. I was lucky to witness this sound live twice.
