Didn't the Mamas and Papas come out to California with most of their hit songs already polished? Someone, maybe Lou Adler, said that he should have recorded everything all at once, as Phillips eagerly dove into the drug scene, never to completely rid himself of those demons. I don't remember the names of the first two albums, but I guess they would qualify in this thread.
Metallica - Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning
Master of Puppets and And Justice for All were great albums as well and even though it gets a lot of hate I really like the Black Album a lot too. Even their stuff after those first five I really like but it just wasn't as well received as especially those first four.
