IMG_3232.jpg I recently parted out a 60's mono reel to reel, to my my delight there was a single ended el84 amp in it, using great looking 606 code transformers, a tube rectifier and a good RCA 6BQ5, obviosly these parts need to turn into a practice amp, if you have anything you have heard and or built please post schematic or links or pics etc.

This is the latest incarnation of my SE "6BQ5" amp. I got a thread about it here somewhere, but I haven't got around to update it. The input 6J32P pentode is the Soviet equivalent of an EF86. Instead of the crazy high gain used by Vox, the setup I have here gives a gain of about 80. The second and third stages are ripped off directly from the Marshall 2204, but I warmed up the first triode a bit so I get a little bit more clean tone if I turn the gain way down. The overall gain is still a bit too high when fully cranked so the amp squeals a bit, but I don't do that because the sound is too saturated at that point. I had initially used a 6P14P output tube, which is the same as a 6BQ5, but I put in a 6P1P because I have a bunch of them sitting around.

[EDIT]oops, the grid stopper on the output tube should be 8.2K[/EDIT]

My favorite EL-84 single ended build was basically a 5F1 Champ with a 6EU7 pre amp tube with a cheap 10 inch ceramic speaker. May have just been the combination of parts I had in my parts drawer but it was the only EL-84 single ended amp that I liked the sound of.
Pretty sure it had a 500K volume pot also. I can't find any pictures of it and it was given away to a fund raiser but it was a simple point to point wired one input chassis.
6EU7's are more expensive and probably less available but it made a difference to my ears. Not as bright or harsh??? as say my old VC508.

Another reel to reel lives on!!!

Was this a straight 5F1 with different tubes, or where different parts values involved? What about voltage on the plate of the EL-84.

I figured you would ask that... I gave it away for a fund raiser for a guy that got trapped under a tree he was cutting down so I really didn't spend much time keeping records. Knowing me it was straight 5F1. Power trans was a 117 input rated at 190V out. I'm pretty sure it was under 70 ma. My household line is 123 so go from there. Solid stare rectifier 1.35X195 is 260ish. I don't remember using any dropping resistors before first node.

Hope that helps. Or at least doesn't hurt.
