Lions & Tigers oh Mi !
.

My 1970 MIJ LP has the HB sized GFS Mean 90 at the bridge and GFS Dynasonic at the neck. It's a fun bar band kind of guitar.

P90s at the neck can be much too dark for many players, especially some of the popular brands. Backup is use a 0.047uF capacitor in series with the pickup hot lead to cut the muddiness. Or go for a different style neck pickup like I did.

If you have an HH type guitar, rotate the bridge pickup so the screw poles are on the neck-side bobbin, raise them 1/8th to 3/16ths of an inch. This puts the screw poles in the same location as a P90 bobbin poles and you'll get all the benefits of a P90 tone along with humbucker noise reduction. I've done this mod on three HH guitars so far and they sound ten times better. Might save you some solder slinging.

That kinda sums it up. I know Lollars are the bees knees og P90s and have what Im looking for but would prefer a less expensive alternative.

I checked Bootstrap but they don't make humbucker sized P90s.

Any ideas?

Here are some reviews of P-94s, as a group, including some on the low budget end of things. The reviews are quite old, but most of the pickups are still in production and the reviews are as valid as they ever were.

Also a Bootstrap user. I have the “mean” one in my Baritone. I am not P90-fied enough to speak for their “authentic” sound, or lack thereof, but I like the way it sounds, so that’s good enough for me.

And they are on the website. HB-90 Clean or Mean.

LP Studio Ltd came with P94s. I don’t take this one out to gig so I can’t comment on their performance but they look cool.

The GFS Mean 90s sound great. I've never had P90s of HB sized P90s before so I can't compare them to anything. They sound great clean and sound pretty heavy with distortion. I hope to post up some soundclips in the future after I get them dialed in

Thanks for the update. I'm going to do a little research on the Dream 90.

Btw, very nice install work.

As for Lollars, I have one of their regular dogear P90s in a Junior and it's AMAZING.
My philosophy is when you're only running one pickup, make it a great one.

Bluesbucker is great! It looks like a Humbucker, but is more like a P90 with PAF Character and splitted it is like a big fat Strat SC. And split it doesn't lose volume, very cool pickup!

Early PAFs sound a lot like P90s, so, a Bluesbucker maybe worth a try as it sounds to me just perfect in the neck position, split or not. As one coil is not magnetites, it also sounds different if you have the pole pieces aimed at the neck or the bridge.

I just noticed your post now, just after ordering a set of Cleans. Your post was nice validation that they sound great. Thanks!
