In lockdown, been doing a lot of simple, quiet guitar playing, and . . .

I am nowhere near as good as I thought I was.

Strip everything away. Stop the world. Soak in the silence.

Plug in the guitar. Hit some notes.

And the truth is out. Oh dear.

I don't know how I've been getting away with it.

its a funny thing, I don't know if its "not as good as I thought" per-se, but it a differnet dynamic. I find myself lately just riffing and doing legato tunes, this interference in the world has kinda changed my playing in a way I am playing different.-trying new Ideas

Been turning more to my acoustics. Discovered that my fingerpicking is getting rather rusty.

One of my teachers used to say, "You're never as good as you think you are, but you're never as bad as you think you are either."

I always practice with the guitar straight into the amp, no pedals, no effects, no compression, just as clean as possible. There's no hiding when you're playing like that.

Lately I've been working on expanding my vocabulary. I've got some TrueFire courses and I'll learn a lick then work it into my playing. When I think I've got it, I'll start on the next one. It's not sexy and flashy and sometimes not even fun, but I've been practicing 3 - 4 hours a day and I can really tell a huge difference in my playing.

The fun part is when you're jamming away and you think, "That doesn't even sound like me."
