I'll bet Buddy Holly sat around discussing this sort of stuff with his pals.

    Not! ;)

I can see your house from here.
I could see Buddy having a five minute discussion about guitar finishes.
But then he'd write a hit song.

One thing I have always wanted to try is to take a mid 70s Strat, strip off the finish from the body and neck, and make sure they are nice and clean. Mod the neck mount to 4 bolt. Then refinish them as done in the late 50s, early 60s, and see how much better the guitar would be. BUT now due to the cost of 70s Strats, it becomes cost prohibitive.

Confirmation bias is the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms or supports one's prior beliefsor values.[1] People display this bias when they select information that supports their views, ignoring contrary information, or when they interpret ambiguous evidence as supporting their existing attitudes. The effect is strongest for desired outcomes, for emotionally charged issues, and for deeply entrenched beliefs. Confirmation bias cannot be eliminated entirely, but it can be managed, for example, by education and training in critical thinking skills.

Which is why, the more your results appear to confirm your previous beliefs, the more skeptical you should be. It's not that you can't be right, it's that there all all kinds of reasons you can think you're right but actually be wrong. It's just a human glitch we need to put effort into getting around.

I thought only Chibson owners believed this inane idea was worth asking in a forum

When one washes their car, there is a perception it drives better. But does it? Same vehicle, in the same mechanical condition, the only difference is that a thin coat of dirt/dust has been removed.
The only thing that’s changed is the driver’s perception.
Maybe it’s one’s perception that needs to be measured and not the coating on the car body/guitar body.

Only with acoustic guitars. Electrics, nah. But acoustics very much so because, in a sense, their soundboards are 'in' the signal path. Lowden uses a very, very thin finish for a reason, and it certainly isnt because it makes the guitar ding proof.

Ear wax has a greater effect than guitar wax.

You might have missed the point on picking a guitar. If it's more resonant and has a better feeling neck than the other guitars, competent reassembly will insure you still have a resonant instrument, and the neck will still feel good. If you repaint it, it will still sound better than repainting one of the lesser resonant guitars.

My finger is hovering on ignore, but maybe in some sick way I’m enjoying the macabre parade of tonal minutiae threads.

I think to measure differences in tone from different coatings on strats etc you have to hear them unplugged; if there is no difference there it is certain there will be no difference through an amp... unless there are different pickups etc?

I'm sick of these polls. There seems to be a flurry of them. plastic vs wood pins, finish, even the bloody strap! Enough already!
