Popped into my head and isn't leaving just yet. But what a great melody. No slight on the accompaniment and lyrics, but what a tune. This could have been written by Beethoven (not the cadence, as that is really style-dependent). Beethoven, Haydn, and Mozart were all masters of that same type of splitting into two parts, where repeated high notes form a melody, while the descending notes form a counter-melody. Integrating two melodies into one is something that composers these days study.

I'm hoping that some of the best stuff from our time is still being done at that level, where there is still invention being done in some styles.

Lyrically, I think it's one of Hanks masterpieces. It paints a vivid picture with few words. I do like Steve's cover. Stripped to the bare essentials, and still it carries.

My favorite version of that song (and one of my favorite Jerry Lee tracks):

I always loved those lyrics. Not what you expect from your average honky tonk bawl. Extraordinary.

The silence of a falling star
    Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry

I read an interview with Leonard Cohen once where he said there really wasn't any point writing love songs any more, as Hank had already covered everything as well as it was ever going to be covered. Hard to disagree.

While it was sang different and kind of operatic singer Gary Morris had a good rendition of it. Hank's version is still my favorite.

A simple tune with words that go so deep it can really break a man's heart. True poetry.

I know this sounds kind of " Duh!!" but Hank really knew how to pair up his lyrics with melody/chord changes that are just so complimentary- creating simple songs that were perfect

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
    Cold, Cold Heart
    Your Cheatin' Heart
    Hey Good Lookin'

That was an interesting article. I love that song. According to the article, Gilley also wrote "Cold, Cold Heart" and sold it to Hank Williams.

Edit: I'm sticking on Junior's words, "That don't deserve no answer, Hoss. . . ."

'nother edit: looks like Acuff-Rose gets the royalties anyway, ?

I didn't know about Paul Gilley. Interesting read. I do like learning new things :)

I still think Hank was decades ahead of his peers. There are some lovely couplets in songs like 'Hey Good Lookin'' and 'I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive' and so many more that bear repeated listening to catch them all.

The full impact of this song can only be felt with your rear end hiked up on a barstool, three sheets to the wind after you've just busted up with your... I've seen 'em not at the could stage, but at the full blown crying jag stage, you could hose down the place with their tears. The real reason Hank was able to write all of those tearjerkers was he was from Alabama, when he was growing up, the whole state was in tears, he had plenty to draw from.

I'm callin' BS on Hank not writing I'm so lonesome I could cry, and cold, cold heart. Somebody always tryin' to grab them coattails. Besides, even if it's true, I STILL DON'T BELIEVE IT! o_Oo_Oo_O:lol:
