I've played bass at several of my churches locations for a number of years now. I've noticed lately that there has only been one guitarist at several services; a few text messages to the worship leader and now I'm scheduled for an electric guitar audition. I figured I'd start reading here now to try and figure some of this stuff out.

    Congrats on the future promotion!

    (Sorry bass players, just joking)

Wish you best luck on the audition.

Is there a pianist you'll be competing with?

Prayers for success. And achieving God's will. Which sometimes is different from our idea of success.

We usually don't have keys, sometimes we do but mostly we have a track for keys and non-guitar strings.

If you take an amp, be sure to leave the power off. If you must turn it on, set the volume to zero.

Well, hopefully you're better than Karaoke-quality and they can dump the canned music....

In fact, the musicians would have to be truly awful before I'd opt for tracks. But, that's just me.

Are you gonna put 2 more strings on your bass or just wing it with 4?

A musical adventure. God Bless. Have fun jamming with the Saints.

Imagine a Saturday Night Live skit (or Babylon Bee):
Bring a Marshall 100 watt and a 4x12 cab... then ask them if they are REALLY SERIOUS about Worshiping the Sovereign and powerful GOD OF THE UNIVERSE. (then let us know how it goes).
It helps to wave a sword about.

Or (just to be a jerk --- in the name of Elijah-like humor)
Bring a line 6 pod with endless chorus and delay, and ask them if Jesus is their boyfriend as well.

I'd prefer auditioning musicians who show up with a Scofield Reference Bible dressed as Moses.

The amps are provided. The lead guitarist is using an isolated cab Kemper at the West location. The other amp is a Vox. I'd be using their pedal board as well. The church I attend has 3 locations with 7 services every weekend.

We use IEMs with click track, cue track, and instrument levels using a Yamaha phone app to let each person adjust their own IEM settings.

We do use live keys on special occasions and for some songs; but we utilize tracks for more esoteric instruments. We also have Ableton live doing stuff.

Did you do it yet? If you are not used to playing to a click track, it can be very off-putting at first. If that's new to you, work on that beforehand. Play with only a metronome. Slow songs, fast songs, loud songs, quiet songs.

A couple of things to consider:

    1. Listen to and practice with a recording of this worship leader/band playing the song if possible, so you have an idea of how he's going to lead it (song structure, dynamics etc.)

    2. As an electric guitarist, know when NOT to play. You backing off and letting other instruments carry a section can add a lot and make you stand out in a good way.

    3. Learn the songs backwards and forwards, and practice, practice, practice so you can get out of the way and worship while you play, rather than worry through the whole set.

    :D Godspeed!

EDIT: I'm sure you know these things since you've been playing bass for a while.

Still waiting on the audition, we have Easter coming up and I'm playing bass for five services over two days.

Aren't C&E like that for church musicians everywhere?
