    Yeah I think I have the vintage ones.3/8" sounds about right.I also have a 3/8" Forstner but the stepped bit might be better for handholding.Thanks for the tip.

    Yeah. And if you buy aftermarket ferrules from the usual scumbags (imported stuff from Pick a Seller), all bets are off because dimensions for both types--smooth and flanged--do vary. Do not drill until you have the ferrules in hand and you can get a caliper on 'em.
