As soon as I’ve finished this obit, and assuming we have the three column inches that it truly merits, I’ll get back to you on that story about buggy whips.

It's a gauge to measure font sizes in graphic design etc. I used them daily as a young man when I was in working in the publishing industry. I haven't seen one in many years.

In the healthcare world Pica is a psychological disorder manifested by eating substances that have no nutritional value. This can include dirt, paper, clay etc.

We can merge the meanings if someone wants to step up and eat the pica pole.

A great photographer I ain't. Although I guess now where page production is concerned it's gone the way of the slantboard, the light table, the waxer, the exacto blade, border tape, the darkroom, phototypesetting, the PMT, and the reduction wheel I still like mine, so I kept a couple of them when I "retired" from my advertising business. It at least makes a great straightedge for cutting, drawing, woodburning, etc.

I always liked the pica scale, 6 picas to the inch and 12 points to the pica. And I'm sure I'm not the only guy building ads who discovered that if you use pica measurements with a calculator, you can figure the percentage of reduction or enlargement you need (Original / Desired = decimal percentage; will be obviously wrong if you do the equation backward) faster than you can find your "wheel".
