I agree on Dassin’s work. That ending scene, in particular, keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Interestingly, he also acts in the film, and not by design. Apparently the actor they wanted to play the safecracker was not available, and circumstances kinda forced Dassin to step into the role.
The long scene in the middle of the film, too (no spoilers) was remarkable, I can't recall that technique ever being used in any movie I've seen, at least not to that extent. When Dassin was acting in his character's final scene in the movie, he said that he was thinking about his own experience being blacklisted (1948–1953), thinking about friends betraying friends. He said this in an interview in the extras on the Blu-ray.

My kind of thread. Dig the offbeat, if well done. Never disappointed in a Billy Bob, really liked Crystal and more recently Jayne Mansfield's Car also with Duvall, John Hurt and a perfect cameo from Ron White.

More seriously, thought Small Things Like These about the Magdalene Laundries (asylums)of Ireland was outstanding. On Prime.

Feel free to post a great flick and make sure to post where it's streaming. No spoilers, please. A short plot synapses is fine.

My selection is called Waking Ned Divine and it's streaming for free on YouTube. It's about a small village in Ireland and they wake on day to find that one of their own has won the big lottery.

Have any good ones?

Seen it several times. A true gem.

I was given the Criterion Blu-Ray of Rififi as a gift. I just watched it last night and I agree, it is *the* best heist film I've ever seen. Jules Dassin, the director, absolutely knows how to build suspense, and the film is great looking, too. Lots of long shadows, interesting camera angles, great film noir. Jules Dassin also directed The Naked City, another must see.
Topkapi, directed by Dassin, is terrific heist movie. It inspired a little-known, but ongoing franchise called Mission: Impossible.

A Simple Plan, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton, Bridget Fonda and Brett Briscoe, among others. Acting, story, photography, casting and other elements are all surprisingly good. I think it's been getting some attention in recent years but flew under most people's radar for a while.

Oh man, that movie drips so strongly with the feeling that "things can only go horribly wrong for these people" from almost the first frame that I couldn't stand how uneasy it made me feel for more than 20 minutes or so.

The Penguin Lessons just dropped this past Saturday on Netflix. I had seen the trailer in the theater, and I like Steve Coogan, so my wife and I watched it at home. The trailer explains the premise, which is loosely based on a true story, and the actors are quite good. Think of Dead Poets Society set on the edge of a cultural revolution in Argentina in the mid-1970s, with an oddly therapeutic penguin as the MacGuffin. It's an enjoyable little film:

Thanks for recommending this. My kind of humor.

My Penguin Friend - I couldn't post the trailer but it is a great movie with Jean Reno as the lead...

Local Hero, from 1983 and you'll probably have to pay to watch it, but it's worth it.

Another good crime drama is Elevator to the Gallows, aka, Ascenseur pour l'échafaud.

Soundtrack by Miles Davis.
It's a amazing movie, for sure! I love this French New Wave movies.

I think you'll enjoy ''Rififi''. I also recommend ''Pierrot Le Fou'' from Godard.
