Gibson or someone else would have built the Les Paul because Les Paul was not going to rest until someone built a guitar that did what he wanted...and the Telecaster Leo gave him did not do what he wanted. Mr. Paul had built The essence of what he wanted when he chopped up that old Epiphone and built Them Log’. Note that Fender’s ‘telecaster’ was not the first solid body electric. Rickenbacker had that wrapped up long before.

I'd get an electric sitar, maybe a used Agile, Original Corals are going for too much money these days.

Yeah we often say Leo invented the solid body electric but all he really did was train us dogs to like it.

Les was similarly an inventor and felt that the guitar could be changed for the better.
Most guitar players of the time disagreed, and felt that hollow was the way a guitar was supposed to be.

Funny that steel players were more willing to dispense with the mummified anachronistic sound box that served no purpose on an electric, yet players clung to so adamantly.

Les was maybe the first player to insistently say no to the box.

Sorry, no Fender no Reverend Eastsider S...

Thanks for reminding me though that I still really want a decent Duo Jet!

In a less consumerist world with no Fender, I might be very happy owning just a good '59 LP Jr and a good Duo Jet.
Preferably the duo jet with only a bridge pickup.

    Two different scenarios:

    - Go back to the 1940s and make Leo Fender not get into musical instruments
    - Tomorrow FMIC goes out of business

If FMIC just shut down tomorrow it wouldn't change much other than to start making Fender guitars highly collectible. I don't even have a Fender guitar right now, just G&L. G&L would more than cover the bases, as would tons of other companies that would continue to make very similar guitars. FMIC isn't even doing much, they just reshuffle their models & paint colors. It's not like it would effect any innovation in guitars at all really. Realistically this can probably never happen in the foreseeable future.. if management tanked Fender the business world would bend over backwards to get the rights to the name and put someone else in there and restart. The brand name is too valuable.

If you actually play "what if" and Leo never got into the MI business who knows what guitars would look like today. A lot of the other options in this thread might not exist! But I'm sure I could find something.

There are a ton of different styles of guitars that would work fine for me. Gibson, Rickenbacker, PRS, Ibanez, Reverend, the list could go on for a very long time I think.

I had Doug Kershaw's 330 for a few years, WAAAY back when. Basically a casino right? with chrome top p90s and this one had a Bigsby. That guitar was just short of magical, and between that and a 52 Les Paul my Pop brought home one night has led me to my love of fat single coil pickups. Oops I apologize I think I'm going off subject

. I get that, but am talking a stock Epiphone STD LP...but the factory pickups are about “OK” after 13 years of adjusting... I love the guitar itself, feels good, but...

Easy for me...Les Paul Standard 50’s, which I have.

Amps too? That’s tough, because i own a couple nice silverface Fenders. I’d go Marshall or Ampeg

Well, obviously if Fender had never been around there wouldn't be any G&L's...
    Yes, it is.
None of those would likely be around if there was no Fender!

That came out after the Strat, so I doubt that it would have been built.

    Nope...

    Nope...

What does it say on your Cabronita headstock?

I think the original post was regarding Telecasters specifically, not the overall company.

    For me this is easy.

My '83 Gibson ES-335 Dot of one of my top 5 guitars in my 54 guitar collection.

This guitar is a TONE monster that is very versatile.

I dunno, without the competition from Fender, they may have continued to think of Les Paul's ideas as "crackpot". The success of the upstarts from California forced Gibson to react.

If there is no Telecaster (Esquire/Broadcaster/NoCaster) then there must have been no demand for such a guitar. Right?

I'd be listening to Schubert and Samuel Barber and Verdi and Aaron Copland. Maybe some piano players. Some Doc Watson stuff.
