If the naysayers are right and the world is doomed, will it miss us?

I might go along with some of, or even most of what you say, but hey, my school house clock keeps almost perfect time, and my retirement watch keeps PERFECT TIME. Which is a lot more than I can say for a lot of the people I've played with over the years. Wait, maybe you're right about that time thing after all, DAMN!

I think statistics will bear me out on this: There is a good probability that BDLH will change his avatar before too long. How much is before too long? Well now, it's just over a little bit.

Well, there will likely still be gasses and heat. Life formed somewhere, somehow. I don't think all possibility of life is snuffed out because all existing life on one planet has been. Even if all bacteria in the Earth we to meet its demise, bacteria can also arrive on meteors and other space debris.

The Earth is a living being in a symbiotic relationship with mankind.
The Earth couldn't live without us any more than we could live without it.
The life forces of humans (living and dead) give the Earth life.
This used to be better known, in less materialistic times.
Do with that what you like.
There's more stuff out there than most of us dream of.

Nothing ever ceases to exist. Things change form, the universe expands and contracts cyclically, but you can’t destroy anything.

By the way, the basic building block of things is not atoms, or sub-atomic particles, or any of that. It’s consciousness.

And you know why they keep finding all those weird particles? Because they look for them. If you look for anything long enough, you’ll find it. Especially if more than one person is looking for it.

And never look directly at anything too long, or it will look back. If you don’t want to be seen, watch things in your peripheral vision. The wolves taught me that one. They know a lot of stuff.

I think you're talking philosophy here. I'm talking dead, like a rock is dead.

This is why we need to wash our hands before we eat after touching space rocks.

The Earth could certainly "live" without mankind. It did so for billions of years before mankind existed, right?

You're still dodging what I'm talking about, I'm talking about ALL life being dead, or gone, or eaten up by what was left just before the end. Consciousness, is a philosophical concept that expires along with death.

Over time my optimism has been destroyed, not merely changed in form, it really no longer exists.

Gee, TD.....what put this philosophical bee in your bonnet?
Although, some of the replies made me remember a bit from one of Douglas Adams' books, So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish......
(I'm kinda paraphrasing here).....Mankind has long thought of itself as having a vastly superior intelligence to other species, such as porpoises. We have made all kinds of technological inventions and advances, developing automobiles and television, great machines of warfare, and the great religions of civilization....while dolphins and porpoises spend all their time just eating fish, swimming and leaping in the water, and making baby dolphins and porpoises.
Dolphins and porpoises think THEY'RE vastly superior to us.....for exactly the same reasons.

Would it be alive, or merely exist? You sort of make my point. People run around saying the earth is doomed when what they really mean is that they fear that they are doomed. The planet is only a living breathing thing, when you consider the life that exist ON it. I don't think the planet much gives a damn about anything, it just is, like the lint in your naval, it exists, but does it know it exists?

That is arrogance of the highest degree... the arrogance that justifies emptying the oceans and land of resources. The planet was not made for us.

Go and look at billions of years of fossil and geological history to see what a small flash we really are.

    That only works for atheists.
Some think that the soul/spirit/life force/etheric body is eternal.
If it lasts forever, it must have been here forever...maybe before it had material bodies to inhabit...and it may continue after material bodies cease.
Plants probably don't have a spirit/soul but they sure have life force.
Where does that come from? Where does it go?

We were discussing with my wife yesterday about earth and mankind.
The way I see it is: since the beginning of civilization, men came out of the food chain and became basically useless to the natural balance of the planet.
All the living species are necessary to each other: you take one out, and there are often several others that disappear.
Men on the other hand became more of a threat for the balance of the planet.
