who else might I like?

[unessential backstory]
I went to HS in the late 70s in rural Oregon. That prolly explains everything you need to know about my musical tastes at the time, but to spell it out I was all about Blue Öyster Cult and Pat Travers and Montrose and AC/DC, etc. back then.

ONE guy at my school was a fan of punk rock, and he was always going on about the Ramones and stuff, but back then most people around there thought punk was just the Sex Pistols and safety pins and spitting.

I went from being a "Classic Rock before they thought to say 'Classic'" guy into the blues and then stuff like John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett, and somehow mostly missed stuff like the Cramps and the Stranglers and X and Iggy, etc. But since I got an iPhone and signed up for Apple Music, I've been going back and grabbing that stuff.

I downloaded Marquee Moon, and...I like it. It hasn't been revelatory for me, maybe because I came to it after hearing a bunch of stuff that came after, or maybe listening to it on shuffle in the car is just not the proper dosage, but anyway, yeah it's good. Other stuff I've checked out, like Joy Division, haven't resonated.
[/unessential backstory]

To get back to the original question, drop some names and essential albums for somebody who has just finally gotten to Marquee Moon.

I've had Marquee Moon on repeat this week in the car, sooo good ... there are portions that imo are quite similar to early Talking Heads, altho I'd say Television's guitar sound is a bit more muscular.

So yeah, the first two Talking Heads albums, '77, and More Songs about Buildings and Food, you may like as well.

If you like "Marquee Moon", check out The Allman Brothers Band "Live At The Fillmore East " and "Eat A Peach." The long jams, guitar voicing, etc. It is pretty clear Mr Verlaine was influenced by the ABB. Once you hear it, it makes total sense.

I think somebody else on TDPRI has also noticed the ABB influence. I do not remember who though.

Also, The Church. "Under The Milky Way Tonight."

Don't limit your Television to Marquee Moon. The 2nd album was very good. "Glory" is one of my favorite cuts on that one, among others. Richard Hell played with an early lineup of Television. You may like Richard Hell and The Voidoids.

Some of the other early influences and 70's punk you may like...

Velvet Underground
The Kinks
Early Rolling Stones
The New York Dolls
Roxy Music
Iggy Pop and The Stooges
Talking Heads early records already mentioned
Devo
B-52's
Clash
Patti Smith
Siouxie and The Banshees
The Slits
The Buzzcocks
Generation X
The Stranglers
Black Flag

As noted, most (all?) of those are in the 70's and that's just a few more popular examples. In most cases the first records or two were the best imo. Devo and B-52's first records, for example, were unlike anything we'd heard before. Talking Heads first 3 records were a major influence on so much after it. Early Clash were great, imo, and sucked later. You may disagree.

In general, the list of bands that came later and were influenced by the 70's punk and similarly branded bands is very long, and still growing. One in particular that I would suggest you check out is Jane's Addiction.
