If Harper were a musician she would have written Mockin' Bird Hill .

Lump a lot of pretty good authors together and they would not total to what that one hit accomplished.

    BTW - Whose your Bou?

I just heard "Go set a watchman" sold a million copies in its first week. Not a bad week.

According to some people, she'd be Milli Vanilli.

One of the most significant works of literature in the 20th century a "one hit wonder"? That's the stupidest thing I've heard today.

She published one book in 88 years, and slipped in a manuscript at the last minute that was rejected some 55 years earlier.

I'd say she qualifies as a 'one-hit wonder.'

She had one hit. No matter how significant. She had one.

    Semantics.

No, that's the "hit" part, and pretty accurate.

yeah if shes not a one-hit-wonder then nobody is.
She literally wrote 1 book (that became a huge hit),
and apart from half a dozen essays thats it.

the only book comparable is Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights.
she wrote that 1 book and 1 poem and thats it.

    crazy!

there is nothing like that in music. Even the Sugar Hill Gang
who were thrown together to record Rapper's Delight
    put out other songs/albums.

Well she did publish Go Set a Watchman, which I guess is Mockingbird pt. 2.

Of course there was some controversy that Harper Lee really didn't write it, but it was put out by her publisher under her name to show that she wasn't a One Hit Wonder.

Either way, if all she wrote was Mockingbird, she's still a giant of literature. Not just American literature, but of literature in general.

Best American female author IMO. The others she would be judged against would pale in comparison.

Y'all are missing the comparison :

Who in music that had one hit, had one hit as significant as Miss Lee's book ?

The writers of Happy Birthday ?

    Nah.

    I think there's no comparison.

Pick just one song - any song - by The Beatles and imagine that was their only output.

Still doesn't work. No one song of theirs could have that impact.

BTW - Go Set a Watchman was a pre-draft and should never have been released.

Does Zager and Evans count? They have until 2525 to come up with something else and its not looking good. In the Year 2525 was the #1 song during (not at!) Woodstock. That alone is monumental.

I think it's probably worth reading for many for the fact that it was her first attempt which was then re-written from another point of view. There's a lot curiosity. Perhaps the publishers took advantage of this fact and her though.

If you're only going to write one book ever, she certainly hit a home run.

Her best buddy Truman Capote was also a one hit wonder with In Cold Blood. Ironic.

Well that's his best known book but he wrote fairly extensively unlike Harper.
