I love female blues singers, they sing in the range I play guitar in, I've learned lots of vocal lines in my time. A great song to hear a variety of blues styles is I'd Rather Go Blind, a lot of women have sang this almost, rights of blues passage song.

Here are just a few outstanding singers,

    Etta James

    Beyonce,

Angelina Jordan will be as big as anyone mentioned here if all goes well, I think at this age she has as good if not better singing chops as anyone here. The extremely cool thing is, we get to watch her grow and get better unlike any other great woman artist here thanks to youtube.

Here's Angelina at 10 belting the blues like few adults can,
At 10 she can do this,,, look out world.

I love Beth Hart, she's sang this song with a number of blues guitar greats.

Do you ever make your guitar sound like a singer, with that sort of phrasing?

Well, I hope so. I’m just one of the kooks hanging in this sub forum picking up stuff from guys like you:)

Arpeggiating the chords, hammer ons, and working up different fills, all are working for me to lend a vocal aspect to something I approach as an instrumental.

Christine Perfect MacVie had a hit with it with Chicken Shack:

    Here's a Faces version:

Normally, I don't like to split hairs in regard to style/genre. But to my sensibilities, this sounds more R&B than blues, per se. I know that it is covered by blues artists, and I find it in most blues compilation books. I love the song and I love blues. I just feel them in different ways. No point to my saying this, I guess.

Yeah it's a great song. Etta just kills it. We do the 4 chord version, ala Kathy McDonald, although I like the 2 chord myself. We do it and our singer just brings you to your knees. The sax player was crying once.

    +4 Etta James!!

I like Bonnie Raitt on some blues songs. Here she is early in her music career. A few folks from Little Feat sat in; Freebo on bass.

Being able to phrase like a female vocalist is a great skill to possess. Although, I was playing at a blues jam this last week I may have duplicated our female vocalist's range and style a little too closely when I was filling during a verse...it caught her a bit off guard and distracted her I'm afraid, lol. To be fair we hadn't played together in months. Interactive accompaniment is a really captivating thing to watch from the crowd and a really fun thing to participate in as a musician.

Etta! ... and that Muscle Shoals rhythm section... Great stuff.

And I agree with Larry. It's more R&B / Soul than Blues... IMO of course.

I like to noodle on this one...

Etta and Rod Stewart are the two versions that do it for me.

The progression IMO is what makes this song particularly unique. I really get annoyed when people want to put the V7 in it....really bugs me! There's a woman in town who I've played with a couple of times and she even wants the IV in it too!! I-ii-IV-V7....it's painful for me to play it that way.

I find the singing of Angelina Jordan in those clips almost unbearable....she's not singing in her own voice....it's so overly stylized and unnaturally affected it's not listenable for me. I'd like to hear what her true, natural voice sounds like.
