A bit late to the party............but, yes the small guitar is a Herlin Arbolito made in Sweden by a one man operation, Jim Herlin. I corresponded with him a year or so ago after someone I knew here in the UK got one. He played slide on it and it sounded great. Jim has a facebook page
Herlin Guitars with many photos and demo vids, including KR, and also a website herlinguitars.com. The basic models are around £2k (UK pounds) or around $2500 US (unless they get a tarriff imposed!). According to an article quoted on his website the 'magic' wood is western red cedar. Jim is a Ry Cooder fan, so maybe he'll get one into his hands too???
Critical dimensions and colours/finish can all be tweaked to suit the player.

Tech specs:

  • The total length: 37,24in (946mm)
  • Nutwidth 1 3/4” (43,5-44mm)
  • Spacing at bridge 2 3/16” (55mm)
  • Scale length 24 3/4”
  • Body: Magic Wood (Europe)
  • Neck: Birch (Finland)
  • Fretboard: Oak (Europe)
  • Trussrod: double action
  • 21 fret neck (14 frets to upper bout)
  • Pickups: Seven Engineering plus a hidden Piezo pickup to dial in some extra wood
Keith's guitar only has one pot. I wonder if it is volume, tone, or to "dial in some extra wood" from a hidden piezo? I also found a pic of this other Herlin guitar that Keith reportedly owns.

Well, that little beat-up relic W&B single neck-coil looks a whole lot like my very first electric guitar that I bought in 1962, as a teen, it was a Sears and Roebucks 'Silvertone'...

The guitars are cool for sure but what a great cover and video. I'm glad Keith is out there doing this stuff. I happened to re-watched Under The influence the other day. He made himself pretty accessible for that one. At the end he said "I'm not getting getting old, I'm evolving".

I like that the luthier’s using locally sourced woods.

Cool. I don’t know what it is, but I hear he has thousands of guitars, so you gotta figure there’s some obscure stuff in there. It would be fun to see a list of the types of guitars he has collected - anyone have any insight to that?

I heard him quote 3000 years ago. I expect he has more now.

Keith and Ronnie are both into Scandinavian builders. Both have used numerous Versoul guitars (The Henry and Raya models). I have a Henry myself and it's quite a guitar. Versoul and Ruokangas, two of the best builders in the world, are both in Finland. There are numerous Swedish, Finnish (Norwegian, Danish...) builders that are unknown in this country. Finland's climate yields incredible guitar woods, some of these not used elsewhere (like the Arctic Birch top on my Henry). It a plus that these builders are pretty wonderful people. They know their American guitars, but do not feel any obligation to copy the vintage forms. I strongly recommend exploring these luthiers. If their work ever comes up for sale, it is sometimes the case that no one in the marketplace knows what they're looking at, so prices are all over the place. Here's my Henry. The wonderful photos come from Destroy All Guitars, where it was sold earlier in its life.

Take a look at this weird guitar Keith Richards is using on the recording of I'm Waiting For The Man by Lou Reed. I can't figure out what it is, but I'm sure someone here will know. Here's a few time codes to skip through the video-1:09,1:29, 1:39, 2:00, 2:13 and then the guitar is throughout the video.

That is one of the Rick Turner guitars that he made for Keith, some with 5 strings etc. Turners have that weird look.

he appears to be playing at least 3 different guitars in this video..
2 Gibsons . and 1 Tele.. that I can see which guitar are YOU referring to?.. the Gibsons appear to be a Les Paul Studio.. and a ES 335 or ES 175.. and the Fender is a Tele.. I do Not know their years..

Well that's an easy one to learn...amazing what one can do with a few chords and a good sense of rythme.

There's only one Gibson in the video. it's a black ES-355 mono with Bigsby, no Varitone switch.
the other Gibson-looking one is a Herlin, which has been identified on page one of this thread.
"Fender is a Tele.." well yeah, sort of. actually it's Micawber '53

and a big box Höfner Bass
