I Wonder if people still heat their home with coal.

The first house I lived in until the age of 3 (1953) was heated with coal. The next house I lived in had been converted from coal to gas. I resided there until 1976. It had the same coal converted to gas furnace until we moved.

That must have been a pain to have to keep tending it.

I lived in a row house in Philly when I was a kid. They all had coal furnaces - not just for heat, but also a smaller one for hot water.

As for tending them - if you knew what you were doing, you could get it going in Fall and have it burn straight through to Spring. My dad was a master at keeping a coal fire going - as iffy as coal heat was, we were never cold.

Dirty energy, though. We'd hose down the coal bin pretty often to keep the dust down.
