@dougstrum you may like this excerpt from Jazz: A History of America's Music:
“Many years later”, the tenor saxophonist Bradford Marsalis recalled, “a lot of younger musicians were hanging around with Elvin Jones, and they were talking about, ‘Man, you know, you guys had an intensity when you were playing with Coltrane. I mean, what was it like? How do you play with that kind of intensity?’ And Elvin Jones looks at them and says, ‘You gotta be willing to die with the m---f--er.’ They started laughing like kids do, waiting for the punchline, and then they realised he was serious. How many people do you know that are willing to die — period? Die with anybody! And when you listen to those records, that’s exactly what they sound like. I mean that they would die for each other.”

It's important to keep in mind this is just three dudes, jamming in a garage. It is at times sloppy, and at times brilliant.

I'm not an absolutist about The Dead and Jerry. Everything they recorded isn't perfect, some isn't even good. But all in all, I love Jerry any way I can get him.

I said earlier in this thread that I have no tats but if I got one it would read CASH for Johnny Cash. The other arm will have a picture of Jerry playing in a small garage with 3 other dudes. Wait, wait, I bet that sounds great but my tat will be of Jerry's face.

It's playing and I love it already. Thanks so much for posting this. And this is the reason I create so many ",blah, blah, blah, post a video about..." threads. Although I love the discourse and general banter, I don't have a local place that has live bands and Pittsburgh radio kinds sucks. So it's threads like these, and posts like yours, that expose me to be music. And for that, I thank everyone!

It's hard to describe the range of styles that fit together so effortlessly on this record. Imagine the early Byrds crossed with Hawkwind (and in fact, former Hawkwind bassist Adrian Shaw appears on the record). Post-punk power pop with a heavy dose of psychedelia? A slightly jammier, more melodic Dinosaur Jr? It's my favorite studio record of all time.
He’d be a Diamond is a great song. There are a lot of overlooked gems on that album. Nice post.

So many greats, but this one covers all bases for me. I loved punk, reggae, ska and pure old rock 'n' roll. The Clash took those elements with their own sound and ran with them, creating one of the finest culturally aware albums for decades to come.
