I think Springsteen has more in common with the Bat Out of Hell record than the Rolling Stones… East Coast salt water taffy boardwalk blues…

The first couple Springsteen records the influence was clearly Dylan and Van Morrison. Then he went in big for the bombast
There was a definite shift with Born To Run. Springsteen mentioned in his book that Spirits In The Night was his Van Morrison song. I love his Nebraska album for what it's not.

Brue has had a very long run and a very very long and prosperous career. I would never begrudge a person success in their chosen career unless it was selling dope to school kids or robbing old ladies of their social security checks,
that said ""THE BOSS" always appealed to me about as much appeal to me as Ethel Mernin or Bob Hope or maybe May West.

Why do the Springsteen threads ALWAYS bring out the Ethel Merman haters?

IMHO what stands out about Springsteen is that his songs are kind of anthemic with big “singalong” choruses.

Except for maybe Nebraska. That one has a different vibe to it.

there is no need for argument there is no argument at all
The first contradiction of the Church of the Misanthropic Nihilist

Nothing really makes it, like nothing at all
nothing at all really makes it
the words are shadows of gymnastics
that fall flat in the collapse of meaning
in the theater of cruelty gauh gauh gauh gauh
Repeat: gauh gauh gauh gauh gauh gauh

Bruce is everything a fan could ask for,
to not be a fan is to ask for nothing at all,
I went the kitchen of bruce
not to worship but looking for something to eat
and found the cupboard bare,
I don't hate the entertainer
I hate being undernourished
on a diet of devotion and hype
jersey style or not

I wrote a Springsteen song once, directly after reading Dave Marsh's biography
I never got further than this rough demo with it

That's a damn good tune, man. I'm serious. Yeah, it definitely shares some Springsteen DNA but it stands well on its own. The lyrics kept me engaged and waiting for the next lines. I really enjoyed that! It's just a pretty great song, period!

Oh that I understand,

but to bring poor Ethel into this sordid thread, who just wanted us to know that she could do anything better than us, and that there was no business like show business.

And just wanted us to know that in the brassiest way.

Have you no shame sir. Have you no shame.

Post of the year

Personally, the only Springsteen songs I know are Born in the USA and Walk of Life, but I'm always in the mood to listen to ol' E.M. getting down to business.

(No objectifying here, just a beautiful and talented artist.)

gee I just got really embarrassed honest, when ever I saw her or Bette Midler or Bob Hope, Mickey Rooney, John Wayne, May West , I would just think, just how stupid do the producers of these acts think we are?
Treating us like we're Lil' Abner or the Beverly Hillbillies?
That tom foolery was insultingly dumbed down.

Mellencamp was only the poor man's Springsteen for as long as he put up with his record company steering him that way. Which wasn't long. I'm a Springsteen fan (he's a force of nature live) but Mellencamp was a more gifted songwriter.

To address the point of the thread, yes there's no question that Springsteen has more in common with Steinman that the Stones.

There are a lot of those, and they've been some of his biggest hits. A lot of it is also related to the sound of the E Street Band - they had a very distinct musical style, and a big effect on the sound of the songs. Also, most songwriters would kill to be able to write a chorus like those.

But there's also a lot of stuff that's pretty introspective and understated.

In highschool we had a pop machine that, as the can tumbled out, it sounded exactly like the drum intro to "Hungry Heart" which was HUGE on the radio at the time and was originally written for the Ramones (and isn't that weird)

It seems to me like many who criticize Springsteen's music for being too bombastic etc have never even listened through a whole album.

My first year in college I lived in the dorms. My roomate had the Born In The USA album and played it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

And over.

Boy do I hate that album.
