I used to hang out in a studio with an Overstayer FET compressor and I seriously have dreams about that thing.

Mine is the vca. Supposedly somewhat SSL buss compressor like. He doesn’t make the Fet anymore, which is a bit strange because I think it was well received.

    Cheers,

I love me some hardware compressors, but mainly for smacking the holy heck out of stuff. I realize that in my modest rack, I've got nothing but cheap compressors and similar junk for smashing things and an ART MPA pre used to dirty up otherwise pretty stereo mics. If I want pretty, I'll probably go ITB, but cranking up the knobs on my first-generation (blackface) DBX 166 does really, really great things to room mics and various busses. Of course, I'm the guy who's also got two Boss SD-1s and two OCD clones wired for stereo in the same rack...

    Ok, it compresses.

Just tested with a scratch vocal. It’s a bit of a different beast. Just two knobs. Should be easier, but sorta isn’t in a weird way. My understanding is it’s a 3:1 ratio basically on the comp setting. The limiter is close to brick wall.

Not a real test, just that it works.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

Gonna pull the trigger on a mu style soon. The Audioscape version of a Gates Sta level. Seven tubes. Three transformers.
I don’t have a mu type. Fairchild, Gates, Altecs I think, and for modern Manley would be the buzzwords.
Not transparent. Thick, full, gooey is what I’m told to expect. Kinda goes against my usual inclinations for clear, snappy and responsive.
    But you only live once.

    Cheers ,
    Geoff

    Indeed.

Sadly I’ve got nothing in the works song wise. Been a looooong dry spell. Maybe this will push my butt in gear. Maybe not. But that’s the hope anyways.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

    A cry for help! :D

Actually, looks pretty impressive ... so does the price tag! Reckon you'll post any samples?

I’ll see. To the extent that I’ve done any recording the last couple years it’s been snippets onto GarageBand on the iPad. Computer has been acting wonky, don’t really have a “studio” space etc. anymore. But this was purchased with an eye to getting going again. Need to sell some crap too. Space, money, space. Need to clear out some room in the racks.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

The Audioscape has landed. It is indeed very different from all my other compressors. Gonna get rid of a couple vca ones that don’t really get used. Dbx for sure, maybe the RNC as well. The Overstayer stays.

Will take a bit of experimenting to see where and how this excels. It definitely saturates when pushed. Not really in a pumpy way per se. At least not my first impressions.

Anywho, going through a lot of my stuff and seeing what I can shed.
    Cheers,
    Geoff
