I set my Windows computer up with a great big huge magenta on-screen pointer. Just for fun, and because it's easy to see.

A little fruit fly just started hiking up my screen. If I put the pointer under him, he stops. If I move the pointer away, he continues up the screen. I tried it 3 or 4 times, it worked every time.

Then I let him get on about his business. I wonder if he thought "what the heck was that all about?"

If you can get another fly to act that way, leave the pointer under him and see how long he stays in one spot. Then, google “psychology of fear of the unknown in fruit flies”. Hey, time needs passing??? Have fun...

    Playing with bugs?

I had a high school teacher who could "catch a fly and teach it to do backflips".

Sure enough, he proved it one day. So I learned it too, and it amazes all the little kids who are stuck at picnics bored to death :)

Simply done - catch a fly in your hand without squishing it (it helps to know they take off backwards). Shake it up real good and then drop it on the table. Smack your hand in front of it. It will try to take off (backwards) and fall back down.

    Backflips, every time.

funny that you mentioned how they take off backwards. That is something I learned when I was 6 years old (around 1960) from a Ripley's Believe-It-Or-Not book.

Right up there with tying a length of tooth floss on and flying them like model airplanes....

    Just kidding, (not kidding)

Meanwhile, the fruit fly is texting to all his buddies on his tiny phone "So I'm walking around on this screen just to mess with this guy. For kicks, I'll stop walking every time he puts the pointer under me, then I'll walk again when he moves it. I bet he's losing his mind over this!"
